ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team picked a victory at its home spring regatta while finishing fifth at the Thompson Trophy and having four boats finish inside the top 10 at the George Washington Women's Invitational this past weekend.
Â
With the conference team racing complete, the Midshipmen shifted into fleet racing mode in three different fleet racing regattas. Navy hosted 18 teams from across the country for the Navy Spring Regatta, where light wind and foggy conditions limited the racing time. However, the racing committee was able to get 14 races in each division completed.
Â
Following the first day of the Navy Spring Regatta, the standings were very tight at the top with Navy, Georgetown and Charleston all within two points of each other. The Midshipmen came out strong on day two and took an early lead before Georgetown pulled ahead halfway through the racing on Sunday. Heading into the final races, the Hoyas had a nine-point lead. In race 14A, Navy finished third and Georgetown placed seventh overall reducing the Midshipmen's deficit to five points. In the 14B race, Navy had a third-place finish to Georgetown's 12th-place finish and the Midshipmen edged out the Hoyas, 124-128.
Parker Loftus and
Sally Johnson finished second in the A division, while
Connor Bayless and
Ana Mier were first in the B division.
Â
Navy had three boats compete in the 18-boat field at the George Washington Invitational. The regatta featured a deep fleet and a lot of tight racing. Sailing in the Potomac River, the winds and current were shifty, which was great preparation of the MAISA Women's Championship next weekend. The Midshipmen sailed well with
Olivia de Olazarra and
Anna Cutler coming in second place, while
Jessica McJones and
Kelly Milliken placed fourth and
Brittney Slook and
Fiona Lobon were in sixth place to finish out the event.
Â
The final event of the weekend for Navy was the Thompson Trophy at Connecticut College. The Midshipmen finished fifth overall in a competitive three-division, 17-team regatta.
JC Hermus and
Kimmie Leonard finished eighth overall in the A division while
Max Brill and
Emma Remis were fifth in the B division. Rounding Navy in the field was
Nicholas Gartner and
Madeline Pruzan in the C division where they finished 12th.
Â
Next weekend, the Midshipmen hit the road for a pair of regattas in New York. Navy competes at the Admiral's Cup and the MAISA Women's Regatta.
