Goes Trophy on the Line for Navy Heavyweights on Saturday Afternoon

Tri-meet between Navy, Syracuse and Cornell moved to Princeton

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Coming off a 10-for-10 showing at last weekend's George Washington Invitational, the No. 16 Navy heavyweight crew program will look to use that momentum and continue building with a four-race slate of competition versus No. 9 Syracuse and No. 12 Cornell on Saturday. Originally scheduled to be held on the Severn River on Saturday morning, the Mids, Orange and Big Red will now test themselves at Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. in the mid-afternoon. The quartet of contests are set to begin at 3:30 p.m. before culminating with the Goes Trophy Race at 4:30 p.m.

The fourth varsity eights kick off the competition on Saturday afternoon with the initial 3:30 p.m. race. Coming off the line in 20-minute intervals, the third and second varsity boats will go off at 3:50 and 4:10 p.m., respectively. The Goes Trophy contest will conclude the day of racing for the three teams.

Navy will host an audio broadcast of the racing at the following link and phone number: The phone number is 213-493-0221. Fans can also listen on-line from their home computer or smart phone at: http://portal.stretchinternet.com/navy/

What's at Stake
Goes Trophy
Dating back to 1955 and presented to the winner of the heavyweight varsity race between Navy, Cornell and Syracuse, the trophy was created by Clifford "Tip" Goes (Syracuse - 1914) to honor Jim Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. All-time, Navy holds a slim edge with 27 wins versus 25 for Cornell and 11 for Syracuse.

Stagg Cup
The Stagg Cup is presented to the program that scores the most points in the combined action between the V8, 2V8 and 3V8 boats.

Last Year's Matchup
Racing at the Onondaga Lake Outlet in Syracuse last April 14, Cornell went home with the Goes hardware, while the Syracuse took control of the Stagg Trophy. Navy placed first in the fourth varsity eight race and second in the third varsity competition to highlight the team's performance. In the first varsity race, Cornell came in first at 5:58.1 with Syracuse in second at 5:59.1. Navy placed third with a time of 6:04.3.
