Action Suspended in Second Round of Patriot League Men’s Golf Championship

HAMILTON, N.Y. — The Navy men's golf team was in fifth place at the end of the opening round before pushing up to third when play at the 2019 Patriot League Championship was suspended early in the second round due to unsafe course conditions. Bucknell and Lafayette are tied for the team lead at 12-over par, while Army and Navy are a stroke back in third and the host Colgate rounds out the top five at 14-over. Weather permitting, play will resume on Sunday at 8 a.m. with the completion of round two followed by round three.

The eight-team field was greeted on Saturday morning at Colgate's Seven Oaks Golf Club not only with unseasonably cold temperatures in the 30s, but golfers were ravaged by rain and snow showers throughout the day, along with winds gusting in upwards of 25-30 miles per hour.

Lehigh shot an 11-over par 299 to lead the field at the end of the first round with Bucknell, Colgate and Lafayette, all carding 12-over par 300 team scores, to tie for second. Navy (+13, 301), Army West Point (+14, 302), Loyola Maryland (+17, 305) and Holy Cross (+23, 311) round out the team scoring at the end of round one.

Lafayette junior Will Halamandaris sits atop the individual leaderboard after shooting a 2-under par 70 in the first round. Navy freshman Chad Deegan (Costa Mesa, Calif.) is second with a 1-under par 71, while Colgate junior Ryan Skae is at even par 72 in third place.

Sophomore Michael Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y.) is four strokes back from the leader in seventh with a 2-over par 74, while reigning Patriot League Individual Medalist Charlie Musto (So / Sterling, Va.) and Griffin Peters (Sr / Fountain Hills, Ariz.) are tied for 23rd with a 6-over par 78. Team captain Paul Mauer (Sr / Eagleville, Pa.) is 8-over in 40th, while Thomas Garbee (Jr / Asheville, N.C.), who was sensational at the annual Navy Spring Invitational a week ago, sits in 48th with an 11-over par 83.

"Chad (Deegan) played a great round, capped off with a birdie on 18," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "Mickey rebounded from an early double bogie with a pitch in for birdie on the 16th to shoot 74. We hope to get in two full round tomorrow, and we are confident our guys will get stronger as the day progresses!"
