ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy's intercollegiate sailing team finished second at its first conference championship of the spring at the Captain Prosser Trophy, while also winning the Pinkerton Regatta this weekend.
Â
At the MAISA Team Racing Championship, the top eight teams in the league qualified to compete for the conference title and fourth berths to the national championship were on the line.
Â
Light winds made for numerous delays, but the regatta ran well to get two full round robins of quality racing in before the cutoff time on Sunday. The Midshipmen sailed well in both rounds and came into the final race of the regatta tied with Georgetown atop of the field with matching 11-2 records. The teams had split their previous two races and Navy's final races was against St. Mary's, while Georgetown was up against Hobart.Â
Â
The Midshipmen were trailing St. Mary's around the last mark, but made a comeback late.
Parker Loftus and
Sally Johnson caught a wind shift and vaulted from fourth to first in the race just before the finish. After seeing the first finish,
JC Hermus and
Kimmie Leonard clamped down on a St. Mary's opponent, seemingly securing a 1,4,5 finish and the race win. However, a postrace call flipped the victory to the Seahawks and Navy was left hoping for a Hobart upset.
Â
In the Hobart-Georgetown race, Hobart started out strong, but Georgetown was able to edge out one of the Hobart boats from getting back to the line as the Hoyas won the race and the championship.
Â
Navy's record of 11-3 was second overall and the Midshipmen earned a berth to the national championship in May. Navy's team consisted of Loftus and Johnson,
Connor Bayless and
Ana Mier, Hermus and Leonard, along with
Max Brill and
Emma Remis. The Midshipmen also had reserve crews of
Brittney Slook,
Bartholomew Winn and
Sean Linden.
Â
Navy also competed at the Pinkerton Regatta, hosted by the University of Maryland. In another light air event, only five races per division were completed. The Midshipmen battled through the conditions and won the event for the third-straight year and they claimed the victory in both divisions, while also winning each race in the regatta. Navy's team included
Louis Margay and
Fiona Lobon in the A division and
Jack Carminati and
Anna Cutler in the B division.
Â
The Midshipmen have three events next weekend as they host the Navy Spring Regatta and travel to the George Washington Women's Invitational and the Thompson Trophy.Â
