CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Following a stellar showing at the Patriot League Championship on Friday, seven members the Navy women's rowing program were recognized with spots on the 2019 All-Patriot League team. Four student-athletes earned nods on the first team, while three more were named to the second team.
Midshipmen announced by the league office on the All-Patriot League First Team were:
Raye Brackett (Jr., Twin Falls, Idaho),
Ashlyn Dawson (Jr., Annapolis, Md.),
Alexandria Vallancey-Martinson (So., Corvallis, Ore.) and coxswain
Polly Finch (Fr., San Mateo, Calif.). The trio of
Brooke Campbell (Fr., Los Alamitos, Calif.),
Emily Krulik (Jr., Martinsville, Ind.) and
Grace Lawrence (Jr., Haverford, Pa.) were honored on the All-Patriot League Second Team.
All seven of the all-league honorees are members of the Mids' victorious Patriot League first varsity eight crew that clinched the league championship with a 5.964-second victory over Bucknell on Friday. After racing each other in the morning qualifying heat, the same pairing of Navy and Bucknell raced down the course at Lake Quinsigamond ahead of the field in the grand final in first and second place as the Mids lead wire-to-wire on their way to a 5.964-second win over the Bison, 6:26.834 to 6:32.798.
By winning the varsity eight race, Navy also claimed the 2019 Patriot League Boat of the Year distinction for the fifth time in program history, while head coach
Joe Schlosberg was named 2019 Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second straight year at Navy.
During the regular season, Navy's V8 boat went 2-0 with head-to-head victories over Georgetown and Lehigh, in addition to winning the Lake Wheeler Invitational title in Raleigh, N.C. in late April. The boat was named the Patriot League Boat of the Week on three separate occasions: March 26, April 2 and April 30.
Vallancey-Martinson was the only student-athlete to receive back-to-back first-team accolades amongst the entire league. Three other Midshipmen are now two-time honorees as Brackett garnered first-team recognition after being named to second-team in 2018, while Dawson and Lawrence all received All-Patriot League nods in 2017, Dawson on the first team and Lawrence on the second team.
The All-League teams are based on the teams' finishes in the Varsity Eight Grand Final from the Patriot League Rowing Championship, which was held on Friday, May 17 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
As a result of their league title, the Mids' season will continue next week at the 2019 NCAA Division I Rowing Championships. The Mids will head to the Midwest as the national regatta will be hosted at the Indianapolis Rowing Center from May 31 through June 2. The championship field is composed of 22 teams with 11 teams earning their way to the meet via automatic bids and the remaining 11 slots being filled by at-large selections.
This will be the Mids' sixth trip to the NCAA Championships as the program previously qualified for and competed at the national regatta in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
