CENTER VALLEY, Pa. –– The Navy men's tennis team swept all of the major individual post-season awards presented by the Patriot League and saw five members of the program receive recognition for their efforts in leading the Mids to the Patriot League Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The league office made the announcement of the awards on Friday.
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) was named the league's player of the year,
Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) was selected as the rookie of the year, Ton and
Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) were tabbed as the doubles team of the year and head coach
Chris Garner was voted the league's coach of the year. Additionally, Ton and Thompson earned first-team-all-league honors and
Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) garnered second-team all-league accolades.
Ton repeated his player-of-the-year nod from a year ago when he also was named the league's freshman of the year. He has played No. 1 singles and doubles for the Mids since he arrived on The Yard. He has compiled a 15-7 record at No. 1 singles this spring which is part of the 22-12 record he has posted since the start of the fall. He secured Navy's fourth point in a 4-3 victory over Army in the championship match of the league tournament when he rallied after dropping the first set of his match and falling behind by a break of serve in the third set to win in a tiebreaker.
The player-of-the-year award was first presented by the Patriot League in 2002. Ton is the fourth Navy player to earn the accolade and joins Nate Nelms (2007, '09) as the only pair of Mids to have won the laurel twice.
Ton and Dabek have combined for a 13-1 record in dual matches at No. 1 singles, which includes a 7-0 record against league foes.
The doubles team-of-the-year award began in 2015. The Dabek / Ton pairing joins the 2018 Ton /
Aries Wong tandem as the lone Navy teams to have earned the accolade.
Thompson was previously tabbed as the MVP of the 2019 Patriot League Tournament when he posted a 4-0-2 record over the course of Navy's three matches at the event. He has tallied an 18-1 record at No. 2 singles this spring and enters today's NCAA Tournament match with an overall record of 31-5 this year. Additionally, Thompson has posted a 17-5 record in doubles this spring, which includes records of 9-2 in all and 4-0 against league competition at the No. 2 flight alongside
Peter Lohrbach (So., Little Neck, N.Y.).
This is the third year in a row and the eighth time since the award was first presented in 2002 that a Mid has been named the league's rookie of the year.
Durham compiled a 5-1 record in singles against league foes this spring. His record in all dual matches this semester is 10-10, the majority of which were played at the No. 3 flight (7-6). He also teamed with
Jake Fishkin (Fr., Baltimore, Md.) for a 5-0 record against league opponents and a 9-1 record since the start of the fall season as a doubles team.
While Durham received his first post-season accolade from the Patriot League this season, Garner was named the league's coach of the year for the second year in a row and the third time in his five seasons. He has led Navy to a 31-13 record this year, which includes a 9-0 record when facing Patriot League competition. Navy previously advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and 2018 during Garner's tenure and has posted a combined regular season and tournament record of 38-5 against league foes. This includes a 19-1 record since the start of league play in 2018.
Navy will play at ninth-seeded North Carolina at 4 p.m. today in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
