Swimming and Diving Teams Each Post 1-1 Records During Season Opening Meet

ANN ARBOR, Mich.  –– Sydney Harrington (So., Fairfax, Va.) swept the butterfly events to highlight the efforts of the Navy swimming and diving programs as both squads split meets against Michigan and Miami (Ohio), Friday evening at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich.  The meet was the season opener for all three squads.

The Navy women's team defeated Miami, 202.5-97.5, and lost to Michigan, 190-110.  The Navy men posted a 250-48 victory over Miami and dropped a 225-75 decision to Michigan.

The Michigan women placed third at the 2019 NCAA Championship and the Michigan men finished in sixth place at last year's national championship.

"We are very pleased with the energy and grit to race one of the best teams in the country," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison.  "For this early in the season, we saw some really good racing.  We grew as a team and learned a lot to guide us through Saturday's competition and into the next phase of our training."

"This was a tremendous experience for our program," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts.  "The team has been preparing for this meet for a long time and I thought we did extremely well.  I am very happy with the way they had to extend themselves against excellent competitors."

Harrington posted a time of 2:00.46 to win the 200 fly by 1.13 seconds.  She would go on to touch the wall in a time of 54.06 to win the 100 fly by 1.54 seconds.

Also recording a victory for the Navy women's team was Jamie Miller (Sr., Rochester Hills, Mich.), who won the 200 back by 1.33 seconds with her effort of 2:01.69.

The lone first-place showing by a member of the Navy men's team was Caleb Mauldin (So., Chesapeake, Va.).  He recorded a time of 50.15 to win the 100 backstroke by 28-hundredths of a second.

Each Navy team also had a trio of second-place finishes during the meet.  Martina Thomas (So., Fayetteville, Ark.) and Dominick Wallace (Jr., La Jolla, Calif.) placed second in the respective 200 freestyle races, Brooke West (So., River Forest, Ill.) finished with the silver medal in the women's 100 backstroke, Dean Nguyen (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) was the runner-up in the men's 100 breaststroke, Daniel Cook (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) placed second in the men's 100 free and Madison Milbert (So., Kingston, Mass.) notched a second-place showing behind Miller in the 200 back.  Additionally, Emily Deas (Fr., Johns Creek, Ga.) placed third in the women's 200 back to give the Mids a 1-2-3 finish in the event.

Including the effort of Deas in the 200 back, the Mids also placed third in nine individual events.

Friday's meet was contested in a short-course yards (25-yard pool) format.  The teams will meet again Saturday at 10 a.m. in a long-course meters (50-meter pool) competition.
