CHICAGO, Ill. – The Navy offshore sailing team sent a crew to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, where the Midshipmen won the competition.
Â
Making its debut in the event, Navy beat out five other boats in its class to win the regatta. The Midshipmen's crew consisted of skipper
Don Poirier, helm
Katie Boyle, main trim
Brett Eckert, jib trim
Jared Casados, pit
Ashley Koenig and bow
Matt Gillcrist.
Â
The conditions were challenging with blustery winds coming from the city causing a lot of fluctuations in direction and velocity. On Saturday, Navy alternated between first- and third-place finishes over the five races on Saturday to lead by two points over Michigan and Notre Dame going into the final day. Sunday's conditions were strong with a stronger weather system passing through the area. With the new conditions, just one race was completed on Sunday, which Navy won to seal the regatta victory.
Â
The Midshipmen are now slated to take part in the US Offshore Championship in Annapolis.
