Three Navy wrestlers reached the podium en route to guiding the Midshipmen to an 11th-place finish at the 2020 Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, Thursday at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga.
While NC State had the most medalists (8) and Stanford boasted the most individual champions (3), it was No. 9 Oklahoma State that won the team crown. The Cowboys edged out No. 6 NC State by seven points (116-109) to earn their second Southern Scuffle title in the last four years (2017). Eight different schools (Binghamton, Iowa State, NC State, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Rutgers, Stanford, West Virginia) landed individual champions with only Stanford accounting for more than one. Rounding out the top five were No. 25 Stanford (99.5) in third, followed by No. 10 Pitt (93) and North Dakota State (92.5).
"The Southern Scuffle lived up to being the premier holiday event once again this year," said sixth-year Navy head coach
Joel Sharratt. "It was a great opportunity to test our guys in a tournament format after our early season duals.
"It's never easy coming back from the holidays, managing weight and competing in a field that has the depth of this event. I am proud of the way these guys competed and look forward to the gains we have made this weekend. The sacrifices and lessons learned will propel this team forward into our EIWA dual season ahead."
The Highlights
• Three of Navy's 16 wrestlers who competed at the 2020 Southern Scuffle placed among the top eight.
• 2019 NCAA qualifier
Tanner Skidgel was the Mids' top placewinner with a second-place finish at 165 pounds.
• Also placing were 125-pound
Logan Treaster (4th) and 133-pound
Casey Cobb (8th).
• Ranked 10th nationally, second-seeded
Tanner Skidgel turned in a 5-1 record and suffered his only loss of the two-day tournament to Stanford's Shane Griffin, seeded No. 1 and ranked No. 7, by a 2-1 count in the championship bout. Both wrestlers earned a point for an escape, but Griffin was awarded the match-winning point after Skidgel was twice warned for stalling.
•
Logan Treaster leads the team with a 13-5 record this winter after putting together a 6-2 mark at the Scuffle.
• After dropping his opener to Stanford's Jackson DiSario, 9-2, Treaster won six consecutive matches to earn a spot in the 3rd/4th-place match.
• Treaster earned his first career win over a ranked wrestler when he dealt second-seeded and seventh-ranked Nic Aguilar of Rutgers a 4-1 loss in the consolation bracket.
• Treaster faced Virginia Tech's Sam Latona in what turned into a game of chess as the two battled it out for third place. Following a scoreless opening period, Latona took the lead with an escape in the third before Treaster leveled the match with an escape in the third. The two wrestlers were unable to settle the score through three one-minute sudden victory periods and three 30-second tie breakers. Latona, however, was the victor after gaining riding time in the final 30-second tie breaker (rode out Treaster in the first 30 seconds and then chose the neutral position and was not taken down).
• Taking eighth at 133 pounds was junior
Casey Cobb, who finished the tournament with a 5-3 record.
• Team captain
Spencer Carey came into the tournament seeded third and ranked 16th at 174 pounds. He opened the tournament by winning three straight matches before dropping a 13-5 major decision to sixth-seeded and eventual champion Carter Starocci of Penn State. Carey bowed out of the tournament with an injury and did not place.
More from Coach Sharratt
•
Tanner Skidgel was impressive in his run to the finals with a solid bracket and very solid performances in each match. He has continued to improve in each aspect of his wrestling and is tough to score on, ride and escape from, so he is a challenge to compete against. Tonight he learned a valuable lesson about opening up and not letting external factors change the outcome.
•
Logan Treaster had an off-the-chart performamce this weekend and established himself as a competitor among a field of nationally-ranked wrestlers. His third-place bout was a battle that brought the crowd to its feet as it extended into multiple overtimes. He competed with the heart of a lion and the skill that will take him to another level going forward.
•
Casey Cobb also continued to make noise throughout his bracket. He is such a solid competitor and he was able to string together several solid wins this weekend that will solidify him in the rankings. He is right there and doing things right every day to compete among the nation's elite like he did this weekend. His discipline is unparalleled and his motivational fire is a great spark for this team. He is an all in, all the time guy.
•
Wyatt Long came out strong turning around a match we dropped previously. He has been making steady improvements and shaping up to be a solid 149 pounder in the line up.
What's Ahead
