Greg Durham (Sr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.),
Romesh Kahatapitiya (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Matthew Lee (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) all won a pair of matches to boost the Navy (3-3) men's tennis team to a 5-2 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn (0-4), Friday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids also dropped a 4-3 decision at East Carolina (3-0) on the day.
The Mids began their dual against the Terriers by winning each of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Jack Dabek (So., Dublin, Ohio) and Durham had the easiest time as the duo posted a 6-2 win at the No. 1 flight. Kahatapitiya and
Peter Lohrbach (Jr., Little Neck, N.Y.) would earn the doubles point for Navy as they combined for a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles. The remaining match saw
Andres Ballesteros (Fr., West Hartford, Conn.) and Lee record a 7-6 (7-2) victory at No. 3 doubles.
Navy then won each of the first three singles matches to finish to secure the overall win.
Jake Fishkin (So., Baltimore, Md.) produced the team's second point of the match with his 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Durham followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 1 flight. Lee notched the match-clinching fourth point when he won a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 5 singles.
"This was a good win for this team," said Navy associate head coach
John Moreland. "We were tested in a number of the matches and still were able to fight through and come away with the win."
In North Carolina, the Pirates posted wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to win the doubles point. The match at the No. 2 flight was decided by the score of 7-5, and Navy's No. 3 team of
Christian Pumpelly (Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) and
Gavin Segraves (Fr., Charlottesville, Va.) held a 6-5 lead when the match was halted due to the point being awarded.
A straight-set win at No. 3 singles gave ECU a 2-0 lead.
Derrick Thompson (So., Towson, Md.) cut the lead in half when he recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Diogo Marques, who us ranked 103
rd in the country in singles. The Pirates would win the next two matches to finish to decide the match. Afterward,
Conners O'Brien (So., Rensselaer, N.Y.) would win at No. 5 singles for the Mids and Pumpelly won at No. 6 in the last match remaining on the courts.
"Today was another match against a tough opponent for this group," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "Playing a match like this against a quality opponent will only help us down the road. We had our chances to win the match, which was good to see."
Navy will play a pair of matches Saturday as it will face Winthrop in Greenville, N.C., and Saint Joseph's in Annapolis.
