Offshore Sailing Takes Top Two Spots at the Storm Trysail East Coast Championship

Navy had four boats compete this weekend with Paul Jervis and Wasp winning the championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy's offshore sailing team finished first and second in Division 1 at Storm Trysail East Coast Championship this past weekend in Annapolis. The Midshipmen had four boats compete in the event where their final two boats finished fifth and sixth in the field.

Competition began on Friday as the fleet of seven boats in the division competed in a 17-mile race that got underway at 10:30 a.m. with light wind and a strong flooding current. After slow progress during the first two hours of the race, the wind filled in from the south, which allowed the competitors to complete the course before the five-hour time limit.

Paul Jervis and his crew on Wasp finished the opening race of the weekend in first place with Matt Gillcrist and Zephyr finishing third, followed by Ashley Koenig and Ranger in fourth and Wahoo led by Katie Boyle in sixth.

After no racing was completed on Saturday with the wind never materializing enough for the fleet, the event wrapped up with three races on Sunday.

Racing on Sunday featured a solid northeasterly wind that was accompanied by drizzling rain and chilly temperatures.

Navy four crews were undeterred by the nasty weather conditions and produced solid finishes. Following the win on Friday, Jervis and Wasp maintained the top spot in the division to finish first overall with scores of 1,3,1,2 in the four-race series. Koenig and her crew on Ranger climbed from fourth to finish second overall with a scoreline of 4,1,3,3. Gillcrist skippered Zephyr to a fifth-place finish and Boyle guided Wahoo to finish sixth.

The crew on Wasp that was skippered by Jervis included Lauren Breitinger on main trim, Gary Munsell on bow, Teagan Foley on spinnaker trim, Madelyn Ploch on helm, Joseph Garcia on jib trim, Patrick Michalik on pit, Vaughn Studer on mast and Gregory Smith in the sewer.

Next up, Navy is set to compete at the J/105 Chesapeake Bay Championship in Annapolis this coming Saturday and Sunday.
