The fifth-ranked Drexel squash team (8-5) spoiled Navy's regular-season and home finale Saturday, as the 18th-ranked Mids (7-11) dropped a 9-0 decision to the Dragons at Halsey Field House International Squash Courts in Annapolis.
The Highlights
• Navy celebrated the careers of its two seniors - team captain
Michael Kacergis (Sr / Malvern, Pa.) and
Owen Davis (Rydal, Pa.).
• Kacergis owns an 8-8 record this season and stands 58-32 over his four-year career. He is tied for 23rd on the Mids' all-time wins list and is just two wins shy of becoming one of only 22 players in program history to win at least 60 matches.
• Davis, meanwhile, has also posted an 8-8 record and h has posted a 55-32 mark in four seasons. He is just two wins outside of the program's all-time top 25.
• Navy lost four of its nine matches in extra games, as
Michael Kacergis nearly knocked off Filip Krueger at the #3 position. Krueger took the opening game, 11-6, but Kacergis fought back to take a 2-1 advantage with back-to-back victories. Krueger leveled the match with an 11-7 win in the fourth before closing out the come-from-behind win in the fifth behind an 11-8 victory.
• The Mids also dropped 3-1 decisions at #1 (
Jack Lentz / Jr / Philadelphia, Pa.), #2 (
Owen Davis) and #9 (
Joe Kacergis / Fr / Malvern, Pa.). Only Kacergis led among the three matches, as the rookie opened the match with an 11-8 win the first game.
What's Ahead
• Navy will play in the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference Championship slated for Feb. 7-9 in Washington, D.C. (at George Washington // at Squash on Fire). Matchups at times will be announced over the next 48 hours.
• The conference includes Dickinson, Drexel, Franklin & Marshall, George Washington, MIT, Navy and Virginia.
• The Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference is the first squash-specific collegiate athletic conference in the United States.
• Though formed a year ago (minus Drexel and Navy), the College Squash Association Board of Directors voted to officially sanction the MASC on a provisional basis for the 2019-20 season.
