The Navy wrestling team (8-5, 3-1 EIWA) won four of the final five matches to overcome a nine-point deficit and knot the match (15-15) against Old Dominion (8-9, 4-2 MAC) Friday evening at Alumni Hall in Annapolis. The Monarchs, however, were awarded the win based on the third criteria (criteria c) which is the total match points scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls - Old Dominion 41, Navy 29.
Down 12-3 midway through the match, Navy staged its comeback beginning at 125 pounds. With both wrestlers having earned a point for an escape, first-year Navy starter
Logan Treaster (Jr / Newton, Kan.) proved to be the aggressor at the right time. Treaster scored the match-winning takedown in the final seconds of the bout while holding off a potential reversal to cap a 3-1 victory over 15th-ranked Killian Cardinale. The win snapped Cardinale's five-match winning streak, while Treaster earned his 20th win of the season. Cardinale is also the highest-ranked wrestler Treaster has beaten in his three seasons at Navy.
The Mids continued to climb back in the match when 133-pound
Casey Cobb (Jr / Kuna, Idaho) secured a 3-1 victory in sudden victory over freshman Shannon Hanna. With the match deadlocked at one apiece, Cobb made his move just 18 seconds into the extra frame, scoring the match-winning takedown for the decision.
Navy won its third straight bout and knotted the match at 12 apiece when 141-pound
Cody Trybus (Jr / Elkton, Md.) outmuscled redshirt senior Sa'Derian Perry, 3-2. Trybus, who has now won six of his last seven matches including four straight, joined Treaster in the 20-win club as he now stands 20-9 this season.
ODU redshirt senior Kenan Carter put the Monarchs back on top (15-12) following his 7-2 victory over
Wyatt Long (Jr / Mechanicsburg, Pa.), setting up one of the most exciting bouts of the evening featuring three-time NCAA qualifier
Jared Prince (Sr / Safety Harbor, Fla.) and 10th-ranked Larry Early of ODU. The match brought plenty of gasps from the fans as both wrestlers managed to elude what looked to be sure takedowns by one another. Prince eventually winded Early, who came into the match having won 12 of his last 13 bouts, and took advantage of it in the third period. Prince scored the match-winning takedown and even look to get back points before the match came to a close with Prince upsetting Early, 3-2, and tying the team score at 15-all.
"As the naval service calls for leaders of character ready to serve in the most austere conditions, I can't think of a better way to prepare them than the blend we have here at the Naval Academy," said sixth-year Navy head coach
Joel Sharratt. "This team stepped up and performed on the heels of six-week exams against several highly-ranked opponents and in the toughest and most hard-fought fights we won. We lost the criteria, but certainly won the battle.
"These guys have eight days to prepare for the Star Match against Army and we are at home with great student and fan support and they will be ready for the opportunities that are ahead of us. We are focused on one match at a time and my staff will have these guys prepared for this event. Mobile, agile and hostile, our 10 best will be in Alumni Hall shoulder to shoulder and ready to leave their best performance out there."
More From Coach Sharratt
• We have 5 guys currently in the NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings that spread across our lineup, but we need to bring the guys who are not there yet over the hump and into the national spotlight.
• The most entertaining bout of the evening would have to be 157 where Prince wrestled one of their top opponents and made every position a battle of wills. His ability to scramble and keep the action moving is very impressive and I was very impressed with his composure and competitive grit tonight.
• 125 was another solid victory that further solidifies that
Logan Treaster is a warrior in the Navy Blue and Gold. His composure and relentless battle for position was very impressive and it's another great victory for him as we move to our final week of competition.
• Trybus has found his stride and has taken his competition to a new level - wrestling confident and strong, making scoring holds happen in his positions and wrestling a very aggressive pace. He's been gaining ground every week of the season and is now putting a lot of distance from old habits and embracing his abilities.
•
Spencer Carey again led this team with a solid win with a style that is not flashy, but simple blue collar toughness. He has such solid position and works guys to a point of physical fatigue that it's hard to duplicate in training because there are not many partners who can do it the way that he does. His motion is so good and when his feet are moving he is a threat to both sides of the body and explosive when the door is left open.
•
Casey Cobb had a great win for him tonight. He has been a solid performer and tonight I feel like he broke down some barriers that he has battled and overcame adversity to post a win for this program at 133.
