ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy's intercollegiate sailing team notched a third-place finish at its lone competition this weekend at College of Charleston's Phebe Corckran King Memorial Regatta.
The 13-team field at this year's event enjoyed nice sailing weather in getting back into form after a winter layoff. A strong current in the Cooper River made the event challenging.
With the tricky conditions, it took the sailors a little time to get used to the conditions but Navy was able to score solid finishes throughout the event. In the end, the Midshipmen finished third overall behind Georgetown and host Charleston.
Olivia de Olazarra and
Anna Cutler finished fifth in the A division with
Brittney Slook and
Fiona Lobon finishing first in the B division.
On the home front, most of the squad took part in the Quad Scrimmage where Navy was joined by Georgetown, St. Mary's and Old Dominion in a weekend of early season team racing practice ahead of the league schedule slated to begin next weekend. The Midshipmen sailed well and show a lot of good things while making the occasional early season mistakes that are crucial to improve. Despite no scoring, Navy had a successful weekend to get in great sailing this early in the year.
Navy is slated to take part in three team race events this coming weekend as they travel to Charleston, S.C., Washington, D.C. and Chestertown, Md., for competition on Saturday and Sunday.
