Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Uses Defense and Rebounding to Secure Senior Night Win

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Luke Loehr (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) grabbed the Navy (14-14, 8-9) men's basketball team's 18th offensive rebound of the game and, after being immediately fouled, made two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining to secure a 62-57 victory over Loyola (15-15, 7-10), Wednesday night at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.

"We needed to win the game, no matter how it came," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis.  "Everybody just pitched in.  Growth by our team; happy for our guys."

The teams played a see-saw first half.  Loyola led 11-6, Navy took a 17-13 lead, the Greyhounds jumped back in front 18-17 and the Mids took a 31-26 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Navy opened up a 39-29 lead early in the second half and led, 42-33, before Loyola closed to within one possession at 42-40 with 11 minutes still to play.  Evan Wieck (Sr., Amarillo, Texas), who was recognized prior to the start of the game on this his Senior Night, scored back-to-back baskets to push the lead out to 46-40.  That advantage was short lived as an 8-2 run by Loyola tied the game at 48-48 with just over five minutes left.

Greg Summers (So., Ocoee, Fla.) made two free throws on Navy's next trip down the court.  He then grabbed a defensive carom after Loyola's Santi Aldama missed the front end of the bonus.  Summers promptly scored on a drive through the lane to make the score 52-48.  Cam Davis (Jr., Battlefield, Mo.) snared a defensive rebound after Loyola missed a jump shot and he was fouled.  Following a media timeout, he made both foul shots to push the lead out to 54-48 with 3:59 remaining.

The only points scored over the next three minutes came when Loyola's Cam Spencer made two free throws with 2:11 left to make the score 54-50.  Eventually, Summers made a great block on a Loyola drive to the basket with 49.8 seconds left.  Loehr grabbed the board and soon Carter was fouled with 34.2 seconds remaining.  He missed his first attempt from the foul line, but made the second to increase the margin out to 55-50.

Navy forced Loyola into a missed shot, which was gathered in by Davis before he was fouled with 25.2 seconds still to play.  He made both attempts to extend the lead out to 57-50.  Isaiah Hart missed a three-point attempt for Loyola, but Golden Dike was there for the offensive board and scored on the putback with 17.4 seconds left.  Hart then recorded a steal after the inbounds pass and fed Jaylin Andrews for a layup to winnow the margin down to 57-54 with 13.4 seconds remaining on the clock.

A Navy timeout ensued, after which the Mids inbounded the ball and Summers was quickly fouled with 12.2 seconds left.  He made both foul shots to make the score 59-54.  Back came the Greyhounds and Aldama made a long three-point shot with 5.1 seconds left to keep the decision in doubt.  Following another Navy timeout after the Mids had trouble inbounding the ball, Navy successfully inbounded the ball and Davis was fouled with 4.2 seconds remaining.  He made the first foul shot to push the lead to 60-57, but missed the second.  That's when Loehr grabbed the errant carom and was immediately fouled.  His two successful shots from the foul line closed out the scoring.

Navy held an 18-11 advantage in offensive rebounds and a 51-40 cushion the glass overall.

Each team made 21 field goals, but Navy made six triples on 24 attempts (25.0%) and limited Loyola to three treys on 18 attempts (16.7%).  Additionally, the Mids were 14-22 (63.6%) from the free throw line and the Greyhounds were 12-19 (63.2%) from the charity stripe.

"I thought defensively we were pretty good," said DeChellis.  "They (Loyola) scored 79 points in our game up there and they scored 57 tonight.  I felt good about our defensive effort tonight and we scored enough to win."

Summers notched his third double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-best 13 rebounds to go along with two blocks.

"He (Summers) did a nice job (Saturday) at Army driving the basket," said DeChellis.  "(Tonight) he did a nice job driving the ball and getting to the free throw line.  We are trying to get him downhill more."

Davis, with 14 points, and Carter, with 12, joined him in double figures.

"Again," said DeChellis, "it was this guy, that guy, this guy, that guy, everybody pitched in and did a nice job.  We were playing for number 40 (Wieck) to send him out a winner in his last home game."

Navy will close the regular season Saturday at 2 p.m. when it plays at Lafayette.  The Mids could finish either fifth, sixth, seventh or eighth in the final regular season standings.
