Navy Dominates Top Half of Ladder in Opening-Round CSA Team Championship Victory

The 18th-ranked Navy squash team opened the 2020 College Squash Association Team Championship Friday evening with a 5-4 victory over 23rd-ranked Bowdoin (10-9). Seeded second, the Mids earned wins from their top five players on the ladder to clinch the opening-round match and advance in the Summers Division (teams 17-24).

The Highlights
• Appearing in its second CSA Team Championship under the direction of head coach Tyler Osborne, Navy fielded a lineup featuring five players with previous CSA Team Championship experience and four newcomers.
• Navy is now 32-9 all-time against Bowdoin in what was the first meeting between the two programs since 2012.
• Navy has won five straight matches against the Polar Bears, including CSA Team Championship meetings in 2008, '10 and '20.
• Navy opened a 2-0 lead with wins at the #1 and #4 positions by Jack Lentz (Jr, Philadelphia, Pa.) and Millen Randell (Fr, Chicago, Ill.), respectively.
• Bowdoin evened the match with back-to-back wins at #6 and #8.
• The Mids took the lead for good after rattling off three consecutive wins by #3 Michael Kacergis (Sr, Malvern, Pa.), #2 Owen Davis (Sr, Rydal, Pa.) and #5 Ryan York (So, Hunt Valley, Md.).
• Millen Randell earned his first win at the CSA Team Championship in his first appearance, defeating Adham Sobhy, 3-1.
• Team captain Michael Kacergis earned his second career win at the team championship, defeating Tyler Shonrock in three games. Kacergis, meanwhile, improved to 61-34 all-time and moved into sole possession of 21st on the Mids' all-time wins list. He is one win shy of tying Gavin Morrison (2001-05) for 20th.
• Owen Davis also cruised past his foe, John Milligan, in three games to post his 57th career victory. With the win, Davis moved into a tie for 25th on Navy's all-time wins leader board alongside Michael Beautyman Jr. (2005-09). He is just one win behind All-American Tucker George (2004-08).
• Second-year standout Ryan York clinched the win for the Mids behind his 3-0 sweep against Gannon Leech.

What's Ahead
• Navy will face Middlebury on Saturday evening (7:00 pm) at Harvard in the semifinals of the CSA Team Championship.
• Middlebury, seeded third, dealt sixth-seeded Amherst a 6-3 loss Friday night in the opening round.
