Needing to win two of the final three matches to avenge its regular-season loss to MIT, the 18th-ranked Navy squash team (8-13) came up short and dropped a 5-4 decision to the 17th-ranked Engineers (14-7) Sunday at the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference (MASC) Championship in Washington, D.C.
The Highlights
• The Mids posted a 1-2 record in their first appearance at the MASC Championship - lost to George Washington, 8-1 // defeated Dickinson, 9-0 // lost to MIT, 5-4.
• Navy jumped out to a 2-1 advantage with wins by
Jack Lentz (Jr, Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Ryan York (So, Hunt Valley, Md.). With the match even at 3-3, Navy needed two wins from matches involving team captain
Michael Kacergis (Sr, Malvern, Pa.), freshman
Joe Kacergis (Fr, Malvern, Pa.) and freshman
Millen Randell (Fr, Chicago, Ill.).
•
Jack Lentz, who stands #1 on the ladder, garnered his 50th collegiate victory by sweeping Aman Sanger to capture the Mids' first win of the day. The win also marked his team-leading 12th of the season.
•
Ryan York pulled out a hard-fought victory over Brad Levin at the #5 position. After losing the opening game, 11-9, York came roaring back to win back-to-back games, 11-2 and 11-9. Levin pulled even with an 11-6 win in the fourth before York capped the match with an 11-7 win in the fifth.
•
Gus Prager (So, New York, N.Y.) also saw a strong performance pay dividends with a 3-2 win over Robert Williamson at the #8 spot. Prager jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Williamson came back to tie the match. Prager sealed the win with an 11-8 victory in the fifth.
• Earning the final win of the afternoon for the Mids was
Michael Kacergis whose come-from-behind effort against Henry Martin gave him his 60th collegiate win. Martin won the opening game, 13-11, but Kacergis battled back to win the next three. Kacergis, who is now 60-34 over four seasons, is just the 22nd player in program history to reach the 60-win milestone. He is tied with Tommy McNamara (2008-11 // 60-20) for 21st on the Mids' all-time wins list.
What's Ahead
• Navy will have nearly three weeks to prepare for the 2020 College Squash Association Team Championship hosted by Harvard on Feb. 28-March 1.
• The following week (March 6-8) is the 2020 CSA Individual Championship held at Penn.
