Offense Rolls in Baseball’s 11-0 Win at Mount St. Mary’s

Navy recorded 18 hits with six going for extra bases

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Navy's (13-1) offense pounded out 18 hits for 11 runs as the Midshipmen grabbed an 11-0 win over Mount St. Mary's (1-10) on Tuesday afternoon. Of the 18 hits Navy recorded on Tuesday, six went for extra bases.

Jacob Williamson (Sr., Sims, N.C.) and Kiel Brenczewski (Fr., Fishers, Ind.) guided the offense after they both finished with three hits. Brenczewski hit his first collegiate home run to finish with three RBIs and Christian Policelli (So., Walkersville, Md.) belted two home runs to spearhead his three-RBI day.

"We had good balance in the offense today and a lot of people contributed today," head coach Paul Kostacopoulos said. "It was good to see Christian Policelli have a good day to get him going. Michael Coritz, Jacob Williamson and Evan Lowery continue to have strong at-bats, which is good to see. I was also happy with our younger pitchers today too as far as throwing the ball well. They threw to some good spots and had good command with at least two pitches and some of them had good command with three pitches. It was all-around a good day."

Navy got off to an early lead over Mount St. Mary's with Policelli hitting his first of two home runs on the day in the second inning to give the Midshipmen a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Policelli drove in another run with a sacrifice fly that brought home Williamson – who started the inning with a single – as Navy took a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Midshipmen broke the game open with five runs on five hits in the frame. Following a leadoff single from Zach Biggers (Sr., Walhalla, S.C.), Michael Coritz (Sr., Clifton, Va.) tripled to the gap in right-center field and he scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly from Evan Lowery (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.). With a 4-0 lead, the Midshipmen's offense kept rolling with a single from Williamson and a double from Alex Smith (Fr., Laguna Hills, Calif.). Brenczewski drilled a three-run home run to give the Midshipmen a 7-0 lead through five innings.

Navy tallied a pair of two-out runs in the sixth inning behind three-straight hits from Coritz, Lowery and Williamson. Lowery and Williamson had the RBIs for the Midshipmen en route to grabbing a nine-run lead. Policelli drove in his third run of the day with another leadoff home run to start the seventh inning as Navy grabbed a 10-0 lead.

During the Midshipmen's final at-bat, they got three-straight singles from Matt Wolff (So., Fishers, Ind.), Brenczewski and Colin Smith (Fr., Wilmington, Del.). Ryan Duffey (Jr., Duxbury, Mass.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning give Navy an 11-0 lead. The Midshipmen were unable to extend their in the stanza as they left the bases loaded.

Navy used a trio of freshmen on the mound to shutout the Mountaineers and secure Navy's 13th-straight win.

Reece Early (Fr., Reisterstown, Md.) climbed to 2-0 in the season after allowing just one hit and three walks over three innings while striking out three. Nate Mitchell (Fr., Parker, Colo.) threw four innings and struck out three hitters while allowing just two hits. Thomas Russell (Fr., Fairfax, Va.) rounded out the freshmen trio on the mound and pitched two perfect innings for the Midshipmen.

Brenden Kennedy (0-4) suffered the loss after throwing four innings and giving up four runs on seven hits.

The Midshipmen continue their road stretch on Wednesday afternoon at Maryland Eastern Shore from Perdue Field in Salisbury, Md., at 3 p.m.
