Gabriella Mayes an selected as a NRA Air Rifle Honorable Mention All-American

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Sophomore Gabriella Mayes (Rio Rancho, N.M.) was selected as a National Rifle Association (NRA) Air Rifle Honorable Mention All-American, the national organization announced on Monday.

Mayes led the Midshipmen during the 2019-20 season in air rifle and posted an average of 589.6. Her season average ranks second all-time in program history and she just missed Lisa Kunzelman's program-record of 589.7, which was set during the 2007-08 campaign.

During the 2019-20 season, Mayes set the program-record for the highest air rifle score in an event after she fired a 597 against Nebraska. The sophomore just missed a perfect 600 by three points en route to rewriting the Navy record books. In 14 events this season, Mayes scored at least 590 points on eight different occasions and she had a stretch of six-straight matches with at least a 590 in air rifle.

Overall, Mayes finished her sophomore campaign with a 575.8 average in smallbore, which ranked third on the team. She also finished tied for the team lead in aggregate average with a 1,165.4 and was nearly a 12-point improvement from her freshman campaign.

Mayes and Navy finished fifth at the Great American Rifle Conference Championship in February and the Midshipmen also qualified for the eight-team 2020 NCAA National Championship.

Earlier this season, Mayes also garnered All-GARC Air Rifle Honorable Mention honors.

This marks the second-straight season the Midshipmen have had an NRA All-American after Kestrel Kuhne (Sr., Everett, Pa.) earned honorable mention accolades in air rifle a year ago.
