Track and Field Begins Outdoor Season at San Diego Collegiate Challenge

Field events begin at 2:30 p.m. ET (11:30 a.m. local), while jumping events started at 3:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. local). Running events are slated for 5:00 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m. local).

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy track and field team begins the outdoor portion of the season in California as the Midshipmen take part in the annual San Diego Collegiate Challenge hosted by UC San Diego. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, March 7 at Triton Stadium.
 
Field events begin at 2:30 p.m. ET (11:30 a.m. local), while jumping events started at 3:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. local). Running events are slated for 5:00 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m. local). Live results will be available at finishedresults.com.

Directions
For fans out in California who want to go to the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, Triton Stadium is located at the corner of Genesee and North Torrey Pines Drive. To reach the stadium, exit I-5 at Genesee Ave. and go west.
 
At the top of the hill, turn left on North Torrey Pines Rd. and then left again at the first light (UCSD Northpoint Drive). The nearest public parking is in the Hopkins Parking structure about 500 meters from the track and to the west of the track in the North Torrey Pines Lots. There is no charge for parking on Saturday.
 
Parking
Parking restrictions are now in place for weekends at UCSD. Private vehicles may purchase a pass as instructed with a pay-by-plate system. Park in the Hopkins Parking Structure south of the RIMAC Arena and in the surface lots west of the track at the North Torrey Pines. Designated parking spaces in lot #359 next to the track building are reserved for officials displaying an issued permit only.
 
Admission
$10.00 for adults; $5.00 for students under 18.
 
Outdoor Captains
Prior to the 2019-20 season, seniors Kara Kakascik (Weirton, W.Va.) and Evan Lexo (Groton, Mass.) were selected to be the Navy track and field outdoor captains for the season.
 
Track and Field Sweeps Patriot League Indoor Championship
The Navy men's and women's track and field team swept the 2020 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship, which was held at Lehigh's Rauch Fieldhouse in Bethlehem, Pa. For the men, it was the 11th win in program history and the seventh time in the last eight years that the Midshipmen won the title. On the women's side, it was the fifth indoor title in program history and marked the second consecutive win for the Mids. As a team, the Navy men scored more points in a conference meet (245 pts) than any other Division I school men's team in the country this season. In addition, the Midshipmen scored more points combined between the men's and women's teams (449.5 pts) in the conference meet than any other Division I school in the country this season.
 
Aside from the overall team wins, Navy claimed some individual major awards. Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas) was the Men's Top Point Scorer of the Meet, while Jake Brophy (New Hope, Pa.) was selected as the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet. Freshman Caden Dailey (Centreville, Va.) earned Men's Rookie of the Meet honors, and Director of Navy Track and Field Jamie Cook was named both the Men's and Women's Coach of the Year.
 
Patriot League All-Academic Team
The Patriot League announced its 2020 All-Academic team on Friday afternoon and five Navy track and field athletes were selected. Ashwin Briggs (Pickerington, Ohio), Jake Brophy (New Hope, Pa.), and Sean Casey (Vienna, Va.) were named to men's team, while Kara Kakascik (Weirton, W.Va.) and Sam Orie (Greensburg, Pa.) were selected to the women's squad.
 
Lanzel Named Mid-Atlantic Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year
Navy track and field assistant coach Aaron Lanzel was selected as the Mid-Atlantic Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2020 indoor track and field season. Lanzel led a near sweep at the Patriot League Championships, as his runner won the 800m (Ashwin Briggs), 3000m (Jake Brophy), 5000m (Jake Brophy), 4x800m relay (John Finnegan, Sean Casey, David Nelsen, Nicholas Williams), and distance medley relay (Chase Rivera, Nicholas Williams, Sean Casey, Ashwin Briggs) while taking second in the mile (Chase Rivera). In addition, he coached the Midshipmen's first runner, Jake Brophy, to break the sub-4 barrier in the mile, recording a school record time of 3:59.98.
 
Mids to Watch
The Midshipmen will be sending 56 student-athletes to California for the San Diego Collegiate Challenge.
