Six-Game Road Week for Navy Begins With Two Midweek Contests

Navy takes on Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday and Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Following a 10-game homestand, Navy (12-1) is set to take its 12-game winning streak on the road this week as the Midshipmen are set to play six road games over a six-day span. Navy starts is road stretch on Tuesday at 3 p.m. as it travels to Emmitsburg, Md., to take on Mount St. Mary's (1-9) and then the Midshipmen take on Maryland Eastern Shore (4-10) at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md., on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
 
Navy comes into the week with a 12-1 record and is off to its best start in program history since 1970 when the Midshipmen began that year with a 13-1 record. This past weekend, Navy grabbed its second-straight weekend sweep as it beat Penn State, Fairleigh Dickinson and UMBC. Despite not registering a hit, the Midshipmen still beat Penn State in 11 innings, 2-1. Navy also came from behind in the final two games of the weekend to beat Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-1, and UMBC, 8-6. 
 
Evan Lowery paced the offense over the weekend with a .429 batting average as he went 3-for-7 with three doubles. All three hits for Lowery came against the Retrievers on Sunday in going 3-for-3 with four runs scored. The senior drew six walks during the weekend for an on-base mark of .692 as he slugged .857 for the week. Lowery has paced the Navy offense in on-base percentage as he is reaching base at a .500 clip with a team-best 15 walks. On the season, Lowery now has a .286 batting average and a .400 slugging mark. 
 
Alex Smith leads the Navy offense with a .345 batting average in eight starts and 10 games played as a freshman. He has slugged .483 and has an on-base mark of .459. The pair of Jacob Williamson and Christian Policelli lead the team with 11 RBIs in 13 games with Smith and Zach Biggers just behind with seven RBIs.
 
On the mound, Navy's pitching has sparked the team with a 3.15 ERA in 117 innings and the Midshipmen have allowed the opposition to hit just .221 at the dish. Charlie Connolly spearheads the Navy pitching staff with Patriot League-best 1.04 ERA in 26 innings and he had a stretch of 25 scoreless innings this season. Connolly also leads the Patriot League with 32 strikeouts while allowing opponents to hit .208. Trey Braithwaite anchors bullpen for the Midshipmen with three saves and a record of 1-0. In seven appearances he has a 0.77 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 11-2/3 innings.
 
Mount St. Mary's comes into the weekend with a record of 1-9 after earning its first win of the season over the weekend in an 8-5 win on the road against UC Davis. The Mountaineers are hitting .212 as a team with Vaughn Parker II leading the way with a .406 average and a .469 slugging percentage. Thomas Savastio has just a .179 average but he leads the team with six RBIs in 10 games this spring. The Mount St. Mary's pitching staff has compiled an 8.34 ERA in 82 innings of work and has allowed opponents to hit .353. Michael Yetter has four starts for the Mountaineers and has compiled a record of 0-2 to go along with a 5.40 ERA.
 
Last season, Navy swept a home-and-home season series against Mount St. Mary's as the Midshipmen started the season series with an 11-7 win in Annapolis. On the road, Navy earned an 8-4 victory over the Mountaineers to complete the sweep.
 
Maryland Eastern Shore suffered a four-game sweep on the road this past weekend at UNC Greensboro to fall to 4-10 on the year. Prior to last weekend, The Hawks had rattled off three-straight wins and won four of their last five games. Brian Cordell paces Maryland Eastern Shore at the plate with a .435 average and a .587 slugging percentage. Cordell is also second on the team with nine RBIs trailing only Matt Smith's 13 RBIs. The Maryland Eastern Shore pitching staff has compiled a 4.85 ERA with the bullpen duo of Noah Covington and Cory Poulsen leading the way with a combined 13-2/3 innings without allowing an earned run. Dwayne Marshall has guided the Hawks with 17 of the teams 80 strikeouts this year.
 
Navy and Maryland Eastern Shore last met during the 2018 season where the Midshipmen beat the Hawks twice in a one-week span. Navy first notched a 16-1 home victory before winning a 13-6 contest on the road.
 
Following the Midshipmen's two midweek games, they start Patriot League play this coming weekend with a four-game series at Bucknell from Friday through Sunday.
