With the unforeseen conclusion to the 2019-20 competition season for all collegiate teams, the Naval Academy Athletic Association is recognizing and honoring the student-athletes and seniors from Navy who had their seasons cut short with a series of "Sunday Salutes." The next program to be recognized is Navy Men's Lacrosse.
The 2020 season saw Navy welcome both a new head coach in
Joe Amplo, as well as a new teammate in senior football player
Ford Higgins who had just come off a record-breaking season in which the Mids won a school-record tying 11 games, defeated Army and Air Force to win the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy, claimed a share of the American Athletic Conference West Division crown and defeated Kansas State to win the Liberty Bowl.
The Mids ushered in the
Joe Amplo era with a 9-4 victory over Manhattan in the season opener at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Feb. 7. They followed up with an impressive victory over Furman in which Navy scored 19 unanswered goals en route to a 19-3 victory. While 58 players saw action for the Mids, 18 different players provided either a goal or an assist and 14 of those accounted for the 19 goals. Navy held the Paladins scoreless for the first 51:44, the longest it has held an opponent scoreless since 2009 (Mount St. Mary's / 53:04). Meanwhile, the 16-goal victory was the program's largest margin of victory since 2004 (Holy Cross / 18, 23-5).
Navy dropped its first game of the season in a midweek matchup at nationally-ranked Richmond where the Spiders bested the Mids, 12-9. Despite three ties in the contest, the Mids were unable to pull ahead in what marked the first game between the two schools. Eight different players accounted for Navy's nine goals.
While Navy looked ahead to its game just four days later against in-state rival Maryland, the game was postponed after roughly 30 members of the team (players, coaches, managers) experienced symptoms consistent with the Norovirus.
The Mids returned to action on Feb. 29 when they opened conference play at Lehigh. The game was highlighted by a stellar 4-for-4 performance on extra-man, marking the first time since 2011 (Holy Cross, 5-for-10) that Navy had scored 4 or more man-up goals and just the second time (2009 / VMI) in school history that it went 4-for-4.
Navy leveled its Patriot League record a week later with a 16-14 victory over Colgate at home in what would prove to be the team's final game of the season. The Mids would again excel in the extra-man game, going 3-for-3, while
Tyler Perreten would be named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week following an eight-point performance (5G, 2A, 5Sh).
Brad Alexander and
Tom Evans served as co-captains of the 2020 team, while Alexander proudly wore jersey #40 in honor of fallen Navy SEAL and former Navy lacrosse player Lt. Brendan Looney '04.
A 2018 Second-Team All-Patriot League selection,
Ryan Kern closed out his career as one of just seven players in program history to record 450 or more saves. He finished his career ranked seventh in the Mids' record book with 465 saves.
The Class of 2020 put together a 24-22 record, including a 16-10 mark in Patriot League action. It won a share of the 2018 Patriot League regular-season title and owned a 2-1 record against Army in the annual Star Game.
