ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy lightweight crew program was recently honored for its academic prowess as the Mids garnered the 2020 Academic Dean and Provost of the United States Naval Academy Team Sports Award. Presented by Andrew T. Phillips, the Academic Dean and Provost for the Naval Academy, the Mids, under the direction of head coach
Shawn Bagnall and assistant coach
James Sands, posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.47 for their 66-person roster.
Successfully on the water with at least one boat title in each of the last three IRA National Championships and a second-place finish in the team standings at the 2019 IRA National Championship, the Mids are standouts in the classroom and in
Bancroft Hall, as well. Led by its 14-man senior class, this year's Navy team saw five of those student-athletes finish their academic careers ranked in the top-110 in the Naval Academy's Class of 2020 Overall Order of Merit.
Kaden Dohm (Maple Grove, Minn.), a Trident Scholar, headlines the standout performers as he'll graduate the top of his class as number one in the Overall Order of Merit. Dohm is joined in the top-35 by
Noah Chaskin (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and
Max Gelbach (Springfield, Va.), and in the top-110 by
Pat Urrutia (San Antonio, Texas) and
Brendan Philbin (Tampa, Fla.).
The Dean's Sports Award is a culmination of the team's hard work as the Mids have ranked in the top-three of NAAA varsity sports in terms of GPA for each of the past five years.
