Women's Soccer (16-3-3, 6-1-2 in the Patriot League, Won N-Star)
*Head coach:
Carin Gabarra
Â
• Finished the regular season ranked first in the Patriot League with 20 points (6-1-2); the Mids were six points ahead of Holy Cross and Army. In the Patriot League Tournament, the top-seeded Mids tied Loyola 1-1 in the semifinals before advancing 4-3 in penalty kicks. In the Patriot League Championship, Navy knocked off its service academy rival Army by a score of 2-1. That league tournament action was Navy's 22nd all-time appearance and ninth in a row.
Â
• In the championship game, Navy trailed Army, 1-0 into the 61st minute until sophomore
Carolyn Mang notched the game-tying goal. Her fellow sophomore
Victoria Tran put the Mids ahead for good in the 79th minute with a goal that earned her recognition on ESPN Sportscenter's Top-10 Plays later that evening as she collected a rebound, composed herself after getting dropped to the ground, spun off her backside and whipped her leg at the ball to put a blast into the gapping far corner of the net. Over 1,500 fans attended the standing-room only game at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Â
• Mang was named the Patriot League Tournament Most Valuable Player. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by senior
Alex Jackson, sophomore
Avery Fries and Tran.
Â
• The win was Navy's first Patriot League Championship and berth into the NCAA Tournament since 2007. The Mids have now appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2019, 2007, 2006 and 2003.
Â
• In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Mids traveled to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack. The Wolfpack broke the scoreless contest in the 55th minute before adding a pair of insurance goals down the stretch to defeat the Mids, 3-0. Senior
Sydney Fortson made four saves in goal to highlight Navy's individual efforts on November 15. N.C. State eventually advanced into the Sweet 16 round of the tournament.
Â
• Defeated Army in the annual Women's Soccer Star Match with a hard-fought 1-0 road victory on Sept. 27. Knotted in a stalemate through 73 minutes of action Mang found the back of the net as she flicked in a
Baseley McClaskey (Sr.) free kick from inside the 18-yard box. Solidified by Fortson and her two saves in goal, Navy's defensive backfield of Jackson, Fries, and freshman
Kaitlynn Johns were on the field for 267 of a possible 270 minutes in the shutout.
Â
• Jackson led a group of eight Mids who garnered All-Patriot League playing honors as she was named the 2019 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. She was joined on the All-Patriot League First Team by Fortson, senior
Cadie Higginson and junior
Kristina Dzhandzhapanyan. McClaskey and Tran earned spots on the All-PL Second Team, while Fries and freshman
Jeana Freeman were named to the Third Team.
Â
• Johns was selected as the 2019 Patriot League Rookie of the Year.
Â
• The United Soccer Coaches organization named four of those All-Patriot League honorees to their 2019 All-North Region Team: Jackson and Higginson on the first team, McClaskey on the second team and Tran on the third team. The All-North Region Team consisted of players from the Big Ten, Horizon, Patriot League and NEC conferences. This is the third straight year that multiple Mids have been selected by the United Soccer Coaches.
Â
• In the ECAC's year-end awards announcement Johns was recognized on the 2019 All-ECAC Team.
Â
• CoSIDA named Higginson to its 2019 Academic All-America First Team and Tran to its Third Team. Navy was one of only four DI programs with two honorees over the three announced teams in 2019. The Mids have had at least one student-athlete named to a CoSIDA Academic All-America Team in each of the last five seasons. Earlier in the fall, the midfield duo were both recognized on CoSIDA Academic All-District II First Team.
Â
• Fortson earned the 2019 Patriot League Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor for the second consecutive year. She is the sixth Midshipmen to win this honor and joins Elizabeth Hoerner (2012-13) and Nicole Aunapu (1997-98) as two-time recipients of this prestigious league honor. Fortson was joined on the Academic All-Patriot League Team by Higginson and Tran.
Â
• Higginson was named to the United Soccer Coaches Women's Soccer Scholar All-America Third Team after earlier earning Scholar All-South Region distinction. She is the first Navy women's soccer player since 2013 to garner this national honor that rewards excellence both on and off the field and is voted on by the United Soccer Coaches organization.
Â
• Fortson was selected as the winner of the 2019 Senior CLASS Award for women's soccer. The award recognizes a NCAA Division I senior with notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.

Â
• Overall was 16-3-3 with a 8-1-3 record in games played at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility and 8-2 in road tilts. Was 6-1-2 in Patriot League games with all nine regular season contests decided by one goal or less.

Additionally, the Mids ranked top-100 in Shots per Game (64th – 15.0); Total Assists (79th – 28) and Save Percentage (82nd – 0.803).
Â
• Individually, Fortson ranked 15th in the nation in shutouts with 10 solo clean sheets, 20th in goals against average (0.601) and 50th in total goalie minutes played (1796:00).
Â
• Navy led the Patriot League with 28 goals scored on offense, as well as with just 12 goals allowed on defense. The next closest defense in the PL allowed 16 goals during the season.
Â
• McClaskey was tied for the league lead in assists (6), ranked third in total points (14) and finished tied for fifth in goals (4). This was the third straight season that McClaskey was tied or led the league in assists as she had nine helpers in both 2017 and 2018.
Â
• Mang's five goals ranked fourth overall in the Patriot League; her three game-winning goals were tied for first with other Patriot League players.
Â
• Fortson's 10 shutouts were first in the league, while her 0.60 goals against average was second only to Loyola's Paige Sim and her 0.54 percentage.
Â
• As a program, Navy collected eight Patriot League weekly honors in 2019: Mang (2-Midfielder of the Week), Higginson (1-Midfielder), Fortson (1-Goalkeeper of the Week), junior
Denisse Ramirez (1-Defensive Player of the Week), Fries (1-Defensive), Jackson (1-Defensive) and Johns (1-Defensive).

All-time she finished second in the program record books with 7,624 minutes, two shy of Shelly Moeller's 7,626 from 2006 through 2009. She posted a 41-14-7 record with 27 shutouts (second all-time). Fortson served as the Mids' team captain in 2019.
Â
• McClaskey departs the program with 12 career goals, 24 assists and 48 combined points over 84 games and 61 starts. Her assist total is tied for seventh all-time and her point total is just outside the top-20.
Â
• Higginson's four-year career concludes with All-Patriot League First Team honors in each of her final two seasons (2018-19) and 33 points (12 goals and 9 assists) over 80 games and 60 starts in the midfield.
