Men’s Tennis Earns Five Flight Wins at River City Open

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team earned five flight titles at the 17-team River City Open held this weekend in Richmond, Va.  Navy emerged with three singles flight and two doubles flight titles.

Winning the green doubles flight was the tandem of Jack McBride (Sr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Finn Garner (Jr., Arnold, Md.).  The duo posted a 3-0 record on the weekend, with all three matches being decided in a tiebreaker.  Navy's Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) and Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) also made it through the weekend with a 3-0 record to win the red flight.

In singles, Luke Garner (Fr., Arnold, Md.) won the No. 12 flight, Jake Fishkin (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) won the No. 13 flight and Panyan won the No. 19 flight.  Each of the three Mids posted 3-0 records to finish atop their respective flights.  Fishkin did not drop a set in his three matches, Panyan lost one set and Garner lost two sets.

Navy as a team combined for a 16-8 record in singles and a 9-3 record in doubles.

"It was a great tournament for our team to be able to participate against teams who hold regional and national rankings," said associate head coach John Moreland, who was with the team all weekend.  "We are pleased with being able to earn the flight titles that we did.  It was great preparation for the rest of our fall schedule."

While half of the team was in Richmond, the other half traveled to Philadelphia to face Army in a series of matches on the grass courts of the Philadelphia Cricket Club.  Conners O'Brien (Sr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) posted an 8-5 win at No. 5 singles over Sam Kesti, Sam Vagner (Sr., Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded an 8-6 victory over Paul Roberts at No. 6 singles and the team of Nicholas Nguyen (So., McLean, Va.) and William Pak (So., Chantilly, Va.) defeated Samuel Haikal and Daniel Zhou by the score of 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

"Both teams played quite well on the grass considering it was probably the first time they ever played on the surface," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.  "We are very appreciative to Boris Febroyt the club director and the Philadelphia Cricket Club membership for letting the players compete at such a historic venue."

Navy will play host to half of the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship Thursday through Sunday.
