ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy rowing program will be in action this weekend with heavyweight and lightweight entries competing at the 2021 Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. Both teams will be racing over the two-day event with one boat entered each day. Known throughout the world as one of the premier rowing competitions, the Head of the Charles will feature teams racing in a head-style contest over a three-mile stretch of the Charles River. The junior varsity crews from both programs will kick off the action on Saturday afternoon before the first varsity boats join the fray on Sunday.
Alumni boats lead off the series of Navy and Gold clad crews on the Charles this weekend with former Navy rowers competing in the Senior Master (50+) Eights on Saturday at 9:40 a.m. and the Men's Alumni Eights event at 11:26 a.m. The first race involving current Midshipmen is the Men's Club Eights race at 12:55 p.m. on Saturday. Navy's junior varsity heavyweight and lightweight crews will take to the three-mile course on the Charles in this event as Navy will have two of the 35 entrants in the race with the lightweights in bow No. 4 and the heavyweights in bow No. 6. A third alumni boat will close out the action on Saturday with the Men's Master (40+) Eights at 2:14 p.m.
On Sunday afternoon, the Mids' top varsity heavyweight and lightweight boats will compete in their respective Men's Championship Eights events at 1:49 p.m. Run concurrently, there are 19 entries in the heavyweight classification with 16 taking aim for the lightweight title. Navy will be in bow No. 13 in the heavyweight race and No. 4 in the lightweight contest.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Head of the Charles Regatta was not held in an in-person version. The organizers pivoted the event to a global remote format. Since its origin in 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta has drawn the best crews from around the world to compete along the Charles River. The three-day event attracts over 11,000 athletes and 400,000 spectators.
For the best view of the regatta, spectators are suggested to the watch between the Anderson and Weeks bridges, near the halfway point of the course.
