Swimming and Diving Cruises Past UMBC

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy swimming and diving teams posted victories in all but one of the 32 events as the Mids swept UMBC Saturday at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis.  Navy (3-1) tallied a 201-88 victory over UMBC (0-3) in the men's meet and the Mids (3-1) notched a 177-105 win over the Retrievers (1-2) in the women's dual.

There were nine different individual event winners on the day for the Navy women's team, with four athletes earning a pair of victories.  Sydney Harrington (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) continued her strong start to the season by winning the 200 freestyle (1:51.22) and the 100 butterfly (54.39) races.  Elly Deas (Jr., Johns Creek, Ga.) first won the 100 backstroke (58.14) then won the 500 freestyle (5:06.93).  Brooke West (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) placed first in the 50 free (24.20) and 200 back (2:03.43) events.  Completing the list of multiple event winners was diver Hannah Montau (Sr., Germantown, Md.), who won the one-meter (278.55) and three-meter (301.58) events.

Even better depth was displayed on the men's side as 12 Mids earned at least one first-place victory during the meet.  The lone two multiple event winners were Garrett McGovern (So., Nashville, Tenn.) and Jackson Schultz (Jr., Millersville, Md.).  McGovern won the 200 free (1:41.12) and 500 free (4:31.54) events, while Schultz touched the wall first in the 100 (55.78) and 200 breast (2:00.86) races.

Additional event winners for the Navy women's team were Rachel Schlemmer (So., Sterling, Va.), 1000 free (10:37.42); Abbie Sullivan (So., Haverhill, Mass.), 200 fly (2:05.08); Martina Thomas (Sr., Fayetteville, Ark.), 100 free (52.52); Emily Brockman (Sr., Bend, Ore.), 200 breast (2:21.00); and Riley Gavigan (So., East Setauket, N.Y.), 200 IM (2:09.18).

Event winners for the Navy men were Everet Andrew (Fr., Wilmette, Ill.), 1000 free (9:25.77); Caleb Mauldin (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.), 100 back (48.33); Ethan Tack (Sr., Dix Hills, N.Y.), 200 fly (1:48.99); Callen Aulizia (Warren, Ohio), 50 free (21.01); Zach Peng (Fr., Oakton, Va.), one-meter diving (262.73); Matthew Fadel (Sr., Columbia, S.C.), 100 free (46.31); Nate Sukeena (Fr., Catonsville, Md.), 200 back (1:51.54); Patrick Colwell (So., New Canaan, Conn.), 100 fly (48.39); Blakeman Shaw (Fr., Coral Gables, Fla.), three-meter diving (320.63); and Jonah Harm (So., Placerville, Calif.), 200 IM (1:50.24).

Navy also swept the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay races.

The Mids will be back in Lejeune Hall Nov. 6 when they play host to American, Bucknell and Lafayette.
