Strong Play Late in Sets Gives Volleyball a Sweep

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy trio of Cami Herman (Sr., Brookfield, Wis.), Maggie Bodman (So., Northbrook, Ill.) and Avery Stowell (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) combined for more kills than the Holy Cross team in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-16) victory by the Mids (7-8, 3-3 Patriot League) over the Crusaders (1-17, 0-7), Friday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis.

"Avery moved the ball around really well with both her hitting and her serving," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador.  "Maggie found a great connection tonight.  Cami served and hit like a seasoned veteran."

Each of the three sets were similar as Navy was unable to separate from the youthful Holy Cross team that started three freshmen, one sophomore, two juniors and one senior until at least the midpoint of the sets.

The Mids held a 17-16 advantage in the first set until a 3-0 run capped by kills from first Bodman and then Stowell gave them some breathing room.  The teams played sideout volleyball from there, which kept the margin at either three or four points the rest of the way.

Navy held a 15-13 lead in the second set before a 4-0 spurt pushed the Mids into a 19-13 advantage.  Stowell started the run with a kill, Tessa Bohn (Jr., Nokomis, Fla.) dropped in an ace, Herman followed a Holy Cross timeout with a kill and then an attack error by the Crusaders closed the spree.  The lead would soon grow to 24-16 when the Crusaders staved off four set points to cut the deficit in half before a kill by setter Celie Feighery (Jr., Oak Hill, Va.) gave the Mids the stanza.

The Mids tried to separate early in the third set as they turned a 10-9 lead into a 15-10 advantage.  However, back charged the Crusaders and soon the five-point cushion was down to two points at 17-15.  Bodman made it a three-point gap with a kill, a Holy Cross attack error made it a four-point difference and the tandem of Bodman and Taylor Gray (Sr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) combined for a block to make the score 20-15.

Herman (12 kills), Bodman (11) and Stowell (10) knocked down a combined 33 kills to better the 29 kills registered by Holy Cross.  Navy finished the nearly 90-minute match with 44 kills and a .272 attack percentage.  The Mids recorded more attack errors than the Crusaders (16-14), but still outhit Holy Cross by over 100 points (.169).  Navy also posted 11 aces and 43 digs to better the five aces and 36 digs accrued by Holy Cross.  The Crusaders did win the blocking statistic, 6-4.

Bodman did not record an attack error on her 14 swings, which gave her a .786 hitting percentage.  That mark ranks fourth in school history for the highest in a three-set match since statistics were first tracked in 1991.  Herman and Stowell also had strong hitting nights with marks of .474 for Herman and .500 for Stowell.  Those two players each tallied three aces and Herman also added eight digs.  Bohn paced the Mids with 12 digs, Feighery dished out 17 assists and Averi Miller (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) posted 20 helpers.

"It was great to have Tessa step up and control the back row for us," said Labrador.  "I'm proud of how sharp our subs played with this opportunity to see the floor."

Navy will be back in the Wesley A. Brown Field House Saturday at 7:30 p.m. when it plays host to Lafayette.
