Mike Reid Announced as New Men’s Gymnastics Assistant Coach

Reid competed at the University of Oklahoma and won the 2015 team and PH title

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Head coach Kip Simons and the Navy men's gymnastics program is proud to announce that Mike Reid, a two-time NCAA Champion and multiple-time international championship competitor is joining the program as an assistant coach. Reid comes to Annapolis after a decorated collegiate career at Oklahoma, while still competing internationally with the Jamaican National Team. Most recently, he coached at the Texas Dreams Academy in Coppell, Texas.

"We are thrilled to welcome Mike to the Navy Men's Gymnastics family," remarked head coach Kip Simons. "Mike has proven himself as one of the top developmental coaches in the country and will be a tremendous asset to the overall development of our athletes. As a current international competitor, Mike understands the technique and commitment required of an elite level athlete and will inspire our team to achieve those same standards."

"I'd like to extend a huge thank you to Kip and the administration for this opportunity," said Reid. "I am both humbled and proud to be in such a position that I get to work with the future leaders of our country on a daily basis.

"The majority of what we do in gymnastics is technical, but the results of those efforts are dependent on individual character and team culture. Navy Gymnastics, and all the Midshipmen, embody successful team culture. They live it every day in the classroom, in the gym, and in the hall. With Kip Simons at the helm and alongside Craig Holt, I am excited to see what we can do together with this talented group of skilled and hard-working Midshipmen."

A standout technician on the pommel horse, Reid broke through on the national scene at the University of Oklahoma earning All-America nods in 2013 and 2014 before capping his collegiate career with an individual NCAA Championship on the pommel horse in 2015. At the time he was just the third-ever OU gymnast to win a national title on the pommel horse. He concluded his career in Norman with five of the top-seven scores on the pommel horse in program history. Additionally, Reid competed on the parallel bars with great success. As a program, the Sooners finished second at the NCAA Championships in Reid's first three seasons before reaching the pinnacle and capturing the team title in 2015.

Since graduating from Oklahoma in 2015 he has tested himself in international competition as a member of the Jamaican National Team, while breaking into the field of amateur coaching. Reid has competed with the Jamaican National Team at the 2019 World Championships and most recently at the 2021 Central American Championships. At that championship in El Salvador earlier this November, Reid won gold on both the pommel horse and parallel bars.

Reid's amateur coaching career has seen him make stops at three of the more prominent academies in the Midwest. His first coaching assignment was with the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy in Norman, Oklahoma as he was an assistant from 2013 to June of 2016. Reid then took his talents south as he became the head coach of the Southlake Gymnastics Academy in Southlake, Texas. During his time at Southlake, he guided the program to new heights as they surpassed the program record for Junior National qualifiers and had two gymnasts reach the U.S. National Championships. In 2018, Reid helped Morgan Seyler receive an NCAA scholarship to compete at Oklahoma. In June of 2019, Reid took a position at the Texas Dreams Academy and was mentored at the Coppell, Texas gym by Japanese Olympian Nori Iwai. At Texas Dreams, he coached Alan Camillus, who received a scholarship from Oklahoma.

Reid earned a bachelor's degree in Health and Society with a minor in Psychology from the University of Oklahoma in December of 2015.

Reid joins a Navy program that has cemented itself as a contender for the national top-10 annually since head coach Kip Simons took over prior to the 2016 season. With Simons at the helm, the Mids have qualified and competed at the NCAA Championships every year that the national championship has been held and broke into the top-10 at the 2019 championship. Regionally, Navy has won four ECAC Championships, as well as holds a 4-1 mark over service academy Army in Star Meet competitions, including three straight victories. The Mids concluded their 2021 season at the NCAA Championships and placed 11th overall on the strength of six individuals qualifying for the event finals. Navy is set to begin its 2022 campaign in January.
