ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy swimming and diving teams completed competition at their respective three-day invitationals on Saturday. The women's team placed eighth out of 10 teams at the Ohio State Fall Invitational and the men's team –– which competed without divers –– finished in fifth place at the Purdue Invitational.
In Columbus,
Sydney Harrington (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) advanced to a pair of championship finals (those who placed 1-10 in an event in the morning trial heats). She first placed third in the 100 fly with an NCAA B cut time of 52.51, then earned a spot in the championship final of the 200 fly with a second-place finish and an NCAA B cut time of 1:57.44. Harrington went on to place second in the championship final of the event with another B cut time of 1:55.37.
Martina Thomas (Sr., Fayetteville, Va.) also qualified for a championship final on the weekend. She placed seventh in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.18.
Harrington and Thomas also competed in the consolation finals (11-20 from the morning heat). Harrington finished in 16th place in the 50 free with a clocking of 22.90, while Thomas placed 11th in the 500 free with an NCAA B cut time of 4:45.31 and 13th in the 100 free with her time of 49.65.
Additional consolation finalists for the Mids were
Sarah Sorensen (Sr., Gainesville, Fla.) in the 50 free (17th, 22.97),
Amy Yunginger (Sr., Lititz, Pa.) in the 100 fly (19th, 54.64),
Grace Hastings (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) in the 200 fly (15th, 2:00.83) and
Emily Brockman (Sr., Bend, Ore.) in the 200 breast (20th, 2:18.56).
In West Lafayette, the first Mids to reach a championship final (those who placed 1-8 in the morning) were
Garrett McGovern (So., Nashville, Tenn.) and
Ethan Tack (Sr., Dix Hills, N.Y.). McGovern placed sixth in the 500 free (4:25.42) and Tack finished in sixth place in the 200 individual medley (1:47.71). Day two saw
Jonah Harm (So., Placerville, Calif.) finish in seventh place in the A final of the 100 fly (47.84) and
Derek Nguyen (Sr., Woodstock, Md.) place eighth in the top final of the 100 breast (54.55).
A trio of Mids qualified for a championship final on Saturday. Tack recorded an NCAA B cut time of 1:45.99 to finish in third place in the morning session of the 200 fly. He would go on to place fourth in the championship final with another B cut time of 1:45.50. Also on the day,
Patrick Colwell (So., New Canaan, Conn.) placed seventh in the 200 fly (1:49.69) and
James Lee (Jr., La Canada, Calif.) finished in eighth place in the 200 breast (1:59.46).
Additionally, McGovern placed second in the timed final of the 1650 freestyle with a B cut time of 15:17.95, and Everett Andrew (Fr., Wilmette, Ill.) finished in ninth place in the distance event with a time of 15:40.99.
Joining Tack and McGovern in attaining an NCAA B cut time during the meet was
Caleb Mauldin (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.). He posted a time of 47.58 to win the consolation final (ninth place overall) of the 100 backstroke.
Also winning the consolation final of an event was
Jackson Schultz (Jr., Millersville, Md.). He first won the B final in the 100 breast (54.61) then won the consolation final of the 200 breast (1:58.54).
Placing second in a consolation final –– 10th overall –– were Everett in the 500 free (4:24.87), Tack in the 100 fly (47.94), McGovern in the 200 free (1:38.17) and Lee in the 100 breast (54.88).
The Navy teams are now off from competition until playing host to Army on December 9 in Lejeune Hall.
