ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy offshore sailing team concluded its fall racing schedule this past weekend after placing fourth at the Kennedy Cup hosted at the Severn Sailing Club in Annapolis.
The Midshipmen hosted the 10-team event for the ICSA Big Boat Championship on the Chesapeake Bay on the fleet of the Navy 44s.
On Saturday, the Mids used a strong performance over the first four races of the competition to sit in fourth place, just two points out of second place, after the first day of action. Entering Sunday, Rhode Island sat in first place with a narrow lead over the rest of the field.
Navy came on strong on Sunday, finishing second in the first race of the day followed by tallying a third-place mark to enter the third and final race of the day with a chance to capture the Kennedy Cup.
However, the Midshipmen went on to finish second in the final competition of the Kennedy Cup and after being levied a disqualification for a weather-mark altercation, finished fourth overall in the field.
Cal Maritime finished first and will now represent the United States in next year's Student Yachting World Cup in France. Rhode Island finished second with 29 points and Kings Point took third with 32 points, one ahead of Navy who won their tie breaker with Mass Maritime for fourth.
Navy will return to action in March 2022 as it begins its spring season in San Pedro, California at the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup.
