Army-Navy Swimming & Diving Meet Slated for Thursday in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The annual Army-Navy swimming and diving meet will be held Thursday evening at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis.  The Star Meet between the teams, part of the Star Series presented by USAA, will begin at 5 p.m.

Each Navy team has posted a 6-1 record in dual meets this year, the Army men's team has compiled a 3-2 record and the Army women's team enters the week with a 3-4 record.

The meet will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Olympic Gold Medalist Rowdy Gaines serving as the analyst alongside Navy play-by-play announcer Pete Medhurst.  Live results will be available through the Meet Mobile app.

Accessing the USNA
The USNA is closed to all vehicles without a Department of Defense-approved identification card.  All other visitors must either walk through one of the security gates or ride the shuttle bus.  The free shuttle bus service begins at 4 p.m. and concludes at 9 p.m.  Whether walking on or riding the shuttle bus, those ages 18 and over must present a photo identification card (driver's license) to gain access and those ages 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The shuttle will depart from the blue (west) side parking lot at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.  Enter the lot off of Taylor Avenue (south side of the stadium).  There is a $5 parking fee per vehicle.  The shuttle will depart from and return to the bus stop next to the Blue Angel jet.

There is no admission fee to the meet.

COVID-19 Policy
As per Department of Defense regulations, those who have not been vaccinated must wear a mask at all times when on the USNA grounds and those who have been vaccinated have the option to wear a mask while outdoors but must wear a mask while indoors.  Additionally, masks must be worn by everyone regardless of vaccination status while riding the shuttle bus.

Men's Preview
Navy posted a 198-102 victory over Army April 17 at West Point to win the 2020-21 season's meet for the 30th year in a row.

The Mids return swimmers who total four individual event wins, their top finisher in six events and 79 individual event points from last season's meet.  Returning event winners for Navy are Garrett McGovern (So., Nashville, Tenn.), who won the 500 and 1000 freestyle events; Caleb Mauldin (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.), the winner of the 100 backstroke and Jonah Harm (So., Placerville, Calif.), who placed first in the 100 butterfly.

Back for Army is Evan Zhang, who won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, and Black Knights who scored 54 individual event points a season ago.  Additionally, Army returns its top finishing swimmer or diver in eight individual events from the spring meet.

In comparing the top swimming times or diving scores posted by the teams thus far this fall, Army and Navy each have the top swimmer or diver in seven individual events with the Mids also having posted the faster time in each relay event.

Women's Preview
Navy defeated Army, 220-77, when the teams met this spring.  The result increased Navy's winning streak in the series to 32-straight years.

Navy returns athletes who accrued nine individual event victories, the team's top finisher in 10 events and 153 individual event points.  Back on the pool deck for the Mids are Rachel Schlemmer (So., Sterling, Va.), who won the 1000 freestyle; Martina Thomas (Sr., Fayetteville, Ark.), who won the 100 and 200 freestyle races; Sydney Harrington (Sr., Fairfax, Va.), the winner of the 100 and 200 butterfly events; Sarah Sorensen (Sr., Gainesville, Fla.), who won the 50 freestyle; Libby Miller (Jr., Gates Mills, Ohio), the winner of the 200 breaststroke; Grace Hastings (So., Cincinnati, Ohio), who won the 500 freestyle and Hannah Montau (Sr., Germantown, Md.), who won the one-meter diving event.

The Black Knights do not return an individual event winner, but do bring back their top finishing swimmer or diver in six events as well as athletes who totaled 26 individual event points.

Navy swimmers and divers have recorded either the fastest swimming time or diving score in 11 individual events and in both relay competitions this fall, with Army having the faster swimmer in three events.
