ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy and Richmond men's tennis team will start their respective seasons Saturday when the Mids play host to the Spiders in a 2 p.m. match at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.

2020 Match
Navy posted a 6-1 victory over Richmond during the 2020 season.  The victory ended a four-match losing streak in the series for the Mids.  The Spiders won the 2016, '18 and '19 matches between the teams by the score of 4-3.

The Mids return six players who took to the courts in last year's match and the Spiders bring back five players from the contest.

Navy Roster
Navy's 2020-21 roster features 12 players who were on the team during the 2019-20 season, including 11 letter winners.

Headlining the returning players are Andrew Ton (Sr., Milpitas, Calif.) and Derrick Thompson (Jr., Towson, Md.).  Ton was selected as the Patriot League Player of the Year in 2018 and '19 (there were no individual league awards presented during the 2020 season), the rookie of the year in '18 and the MVP of the league tournament in '18.  Thompson was named the MVP of the 2019 Patriot League Tournament, the league rookie of the year in '19 and also earned first-team all-league laurels that season.

Individually, Ton and Thompson have combined for a 110-43 career record in singles.  Together, the players have compiled a 15-3 record as a doubles tandem.

Conners O'Brien (Jr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) led Navy last season in singles victories with his overall record of 19-6.  This included an 11-1 record in dual matches.  Thompson ranked second on the squad for wins with a 17-6 mark, and Christian Pumpelly (So., Atlanta, Ga.), 15-8, and Gavin Segraves (So., Charlottesville, Va.), 15-11, tied for third place.  Completing the list of returning players who recorded winning singles record a year ago are Jake Fishkin (Jr., Baltimore, Md.), 13-11, and Ton, 12-8.

Navy Schedule
Navy's abbreviated spring season currently features no more than one match per weekend through April 17.  The Richmond match is the first in a three-match homestand for the Mids.  The upcoming slate includes Navy playing host to Delaware (Feb. 27) and Saint Joseph's (March 13).

The Patriot League Tournament will be held April 22-24 at Lehigh.
