Inside the Championship
• Nine members of the Navy wrestling team will begin their quest for a national title when they make the journey to St. Louis, Mo. for the 2021 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championship held at the Enterprise Center.
• The tournament is set to begin at 10:00 am (CT) / 11:00 am (ET) on Thursday with four sessions slated for opening day, three on Friday and two on Saturday.
• Due to the pandemic, there are slight schedule modifications in the early rounds of this year's tournament to ensure physical distancing of participants, coaches and event personnel can be safely and effectively maintained.
• The early sessions will be split in half with five weight classes competing and then after a break, the next five will compete. Additionally, there will be a one-hour intermission between sessions 1A and 1B and 2A and 2B, enabling the second five weight classes to transition in and the first five will safely exit.

Navy's NCAA History
• This is Navy's 72nd NCAA Tournament appearance and first under head coach
Cary Kolat.
• At least one Navy wrestler has participated in the NCAA Championship in each of the last 24 years it has been held (2020 was not factored in since it was canceled).
• Navy has placed among the top 25 in four of the last 13 NCAA Championships, including back-to-back 18th-place finishes in 2007 and '08 which is its best placement since 1990 when Navy finished 13th. The Mids tied for 37th at the 2019 NCAA Championship.
• The program's best showing in NCAA Tournament action was a fourth-place finish in 1954.
• Navy has won three individual national titles, by two men - Pete Blair won the 191-pound title in 1954 and '55, while Dan Muthler earned the crown in 1973 at 142 pounds. Â
• In addition to winning three individual titles, 64 All-America citations have been awarded to Navy wrestlers over the years. While
Tanner Skidgel (2nd team) and
Spencer Carey (honorable mention) were named All-Americans by the NWCA a year ago, the last Navy wrestler to reach the podium was Mathew Miller, who earned All-America honors in 2016 after placing fifth at 184 pounds.
Representing the Mids
• Seven Navy wrestlers -
Logan Treaster (125 / Sr / Newton, Kan.),
Jacob Allen (133 / Jr / Poway, Calif.),
Cody Trybus (141 / Sr / Elkton, Md.),
Andrew Cerniglia (157 / Fr / Nazareth, Pa.),
Tanner Skidgel (Sr / 165 / Tulsa, Okla.),
David Key (184 / Fr / Norcross, Ga.) and
Jacob Koser (197 / So / Dillsburg, Pa.) - earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championship by way of their finish at the EIWA Championship on Feb. 26. Meanwhile,
Casey Cobb (149 / Sr / Kuna, Idaho) and
John Birchmeier (285 / So / Ashburn, Va.) earned at-large bids.
• This will be just the third time in school history that Navy has sent nine or more wrestlers to compete at the NCAA Wrestling Championship and the first since 1969. Eleven wrestlers represented Navy in 1968 (11 weight classes that year) and nine in 1969. Of note, the first time a qualifying method was used for the NCAA Championship was in 1971 with a regional tournament. A year later, regional qualifying was replaced with conference qualifiers.
• While seniors
Tanner Skidgel (3x),
Cody Trybus (2x) and
Casey Cobb (2x) are multiple-year NCAA qualifiers, only Skidgel has actually competed at the NCAA Championship. All three qualified a year ago, however, the tournament was canceled prior to the start of the championship. Keeping that in mind, eight of the nine Navy wrestlers will be making their NCAA Championship debut this week.
