Women’s Tennis Set to Host Richmond on Sunday

Navy caps off its non-conference slate against the Spiders

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – With the match originally slated to be played at Richmond, Navy women's tennis (2-0) is now scheduled to host Richmond (2-3) on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. from the Tose Family Tennis Center. No fans are allowed to attend the competition.

The Midshipmen started the season with home wins over George Washington (5-2) and Towson (6-1) before a three-week pause. In both contests, Navy got the early edge and won the doubles point and then each of its singles wins came in straight sets.

Over the first two matches, the Midshipmen have combined to go 5-1 in doubles matches while going 9-3 in singles competition. The pair of Miranda Deng and Jillian Taggart along with the duo of Katreina Corpuz and Meghana Komarraju has gone 2-0 in both of their doubles appearances this spring. The two teams both won 6-3 against George Washington and then 6-0 against Towson playing at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots, respectively.

With two wins this season, Taggart has moved her doubles career record to 19-5 and her .792 winning percentage is the best in the program's record book, which is just ahead of Corpuz who has a .767 winning percentage in doubles matches.

In singles contests, Deng and Komarraju have each posted 2-0 records to start the spring season. Deng played at the No. 4 spot against George Washington and then the No. 3 position against Towson, while Komarraju competed at the No. 3 singles position in the season opener before taking over the No. 2 spot in Navy's last match against Towson.

After starting the season 0-2, Richmond won two-straight matches to climb to .500 but suffered a 5-2 loss on Thursday against VCU to come into the weekend with a record of 2-3. The Spiders will conclude a stretch of three matches in four days on Sunday against the Midshipmen as they also host George Washington on Saturday.

Entering the weekend, Emily Dunbar and Dessi Zlateva have paced the Spiders to start the season. The pair have picked up two wins together playing at the No. 1 doubles spot while going a combined 7-3 in singles matches. Dunbar is 3-2 at No. 1 singles with Zlateva posting a 4-1 mark on the No. 2 singles court. As a team, Richmond has compiled a 16-14 singles record and a 7-8 doubles mark.

Navy and Richmond are all square in the all-time series as the two programs have split the eight meetings. The Midshipmen won the last contest in the series last spring with a 6-1 win at home. Navy swept the doubles matches during the 2020 meeting between the Midshipmen and Spiders and then four of five Navy's singles wins came in straight sets to seal the win.

Following Sunday's match, Navy starts its road schedule against Army in the Star Match next Saturday at 11 a.m. in West Point, N.Y.
