ANNAPOLIS, Md. ā The Navy track and field team posted eight top-10 performances, including a school record, against UConn at the Navy Invitational II at Ingram Field. In addition, the track and field team registered 50 IC4A / ECAC qualifying times / marks ā 33 for the men and 17 for the women.
Ā
"It was a solid day," Director of Navy Track and Field
Jamie Cook said after the meet. "We tried to come out and compete out here as best we could against a good UConn team. It was really good for our multi-eventers to come out and go through the events because we haven't had a chance to really do that. We did a really good job."
Ā
Sam Orie (Greensburg, Pa.) registered a school record in the shot put, recording a distance of 14.79m (48-06.25) to tie the school's top mark. In addition, Orie posted a distance of 57.19m (187-07) in the hammer throw, which was the seventh best performance in program history.
Ā
Annie Taylor (Nashville, Tenn.) and
Katie Halbert (Keller, Texas) posted the second and fifth best performances in the heptathlon, respectively. Taylor recorded 4,796 total points, while Halbert finished with 4,624 points.
Ā
In the javelin,
Emma Foster (Poteet, Texas) finished with a distance of 49.31m (161-09), which was the third best performance in school history.
Ann Jackson (Roanoke, Va.) finished with a distance of 5.86m (19-02.75) in the long jump, which is the fourth best performance in Navy history.
Ā
Molly Mangan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and
Jessica Nangle (South Hampton, Pa.) finished with the 10th best performance in the 400m dash and 5,000m run, respectively. Mangan clocked a 55.21, while Nangle crossed the finish line in 17:04.26.
Ā
Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas) posted a time of 13.64 in the 110m hurdles, which would have been a Navy school record, except it was over the allotted wind allowance.
Ā
Assistant coach
Joe Delgado competed as an individual in the decathlon. He tallied a collective score of 7,882 ā a new PR ā to qualify for the Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore.
Ā
"I recruited him to Oregon," Cook said of Delgado. "I saw his ability. His determination has grown through the years. The fact that he is able to do that and realize a goal that he has had for probably seven years is really significant. I think it shows his intent. I think it shows the team what someone is capable of if they really put their mind and heart into something. Obviously, super excited for him and his family. I think it was cool because he was able to do it in front of the team. The team was excited for him too."
Ā
Navy continues the outdoor season next Saturday as the Midshipmen host the Navy Invitational III at Ingram Field. Live results will be available throughout the meet.
