EARLYSVILLE, Va. – The Navy women's rowing team wrapped up its 2021 regular season with a series of races on the road at the nation's number three ranked team, the University of Virginia. Two programs that have seen each other at the past five NCAA Championships events, Saturday was used to give the Mids and Cavaliers multiple racing experiences in shorter 1,500-meter contests on the Rivanna Reservoir. Virginia defeated Navy in un-timed first varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four contests.
"We had the opportunity to line up against Virginia several times today. They are a really fast team and it was great to be exposed to that kind of speed at this point in the season," remarked head coach
Joe Schlosberg. "We were able to learn and make adjustments from race to race, which will be so valuable to our speed moving forward. Now we can take this and run with it to the Patriot League Championship."
Normally racing straight through 2,000-meter contests, the Mids and Cavaliers shortened the distance by 500 meters on Saturday and quickly turned around and ran back multiple of 1,500-meter pieces. This setup gave both programs a preview of what they'll see in the postseason with qualifying heats and championship finals coming shortly thereafter.
Navy had four boats entered in the action as it fielded a first varsity eight crew, a second varsity eight and two varsity fours.
