ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team gears up to host its second of three national championships in Annapolis as the Midshipmen host the ICSA LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship on Wednesday and Thursday.
 
The team race championship features 12 teams from around the country as the Midshipmen are joined by Boston College, Brown, College of Charleston, Georgetown, Kings Point, Jacksonville, Roger Williams, St. Mary's, Stanford, Tufts and Tulane. Each of the 12 teams will have three boats in the head-to-head round robin and after the first round-robin, the top six teams will split off into another round robin where the top four teams will compete in the championship round.
 
Navy earned its spot in the team race championship after winning the MAISA South Team Race title in April. During the conference championship at Old Dominion, the Midshipmen put together a perfect 10-0 record through two round robins.
 
During the last team race national championship in 2019, Yale won the event with a record of 21-4 through the final round. At the 2019 championship, Navy posted a record of 12-10 at nationals to finish sixth overall in the 16-team championship.
 
The Midshipmen started its run of home national championships last month with a sixth-place finish at the ICSA Women's National Championship. Olivia de Olazarra and Sally Johnson led Navy during the first doublehanded national championship of the spring with a second-place finish in the A division of the event.
 
Following this week's ICSA LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship, Navy will host the ICSA Gill Coed National Championship on June 7-8 in Annapolis to cap off the spring season. Along with Navy hosting all three championships the Annapolis Yacht Club, Severn Sailing Association, Eastport Yacht Club, Annapolis Sailing School and Georgetown University are also supporting the championship as competing teams will launch from the local clubs throughout Annapolis.
