OMAHA, Neb. –– Rising sophomore
Garrett McGovern (Nashville, Tenn.) and recent graduate
Luke Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) placed first and second, respectively, in the 800 freestyle timed final to highlight Navy's efforts during Wave I of the USA Swimming Olympic Team Trials that concluded Monday night at the CHI Health Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb.
McGovern won the 800 free timed final in a clocking of 8:11.25 and Johnson finished in second place with a showing of 8:12.13. Johnson also placed fifth in the timed final of the 1500 freestyle with his time of 15:44.30, and McGovern finished in eighth place in the same event with his effort of 15:54.17.
Competing in an A final during Wave I were 2021 graduate
Ryan Waters (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and rising sophomore
Matt Murphy (Mullica Hills, N.J.). Waters first posted a prelims time of 1:51.03 in the 200 freestyle to advance to the A final. He went on to record a time of 1:52.00 to finish in sixth place. Murphy placed sixth in the prelims of the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:16.95 to qualify for the A final. He would finish in eighth place with a time of 2:20.38.
Five Mids competed in B finals during Wave I.
Dominick Wallace (La Jolla, Calif.), who was a member of the Class of 2021, won the B final to finish ninth overall in the 200 freestyle, rising junior
Jackson Schultz (Millersville, Md.) placed second (10th overall) in the 200 individual medley, rising senior
Martina Thomas (Fayetteville, Ark.) placed fourth in the B final (12th) in the 200 freestyle, recent graduate
Billy Cadigan (Lutherville, Md.) finished in sixth place (14th) in the 200 backstroke, and recent graduate
Jack Dunworth (Austin, Texas) placed seventh (15th) in the 400 freestyle.
Wave II, which will determine the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team, runs June 13-19. Rising senior
Sydney Harrington (Fairfax, Va.) along with
Chris Bondarowicz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and
Ethan Tack (Dix Hills, N.Y.), who were members of the Class of 2021, will compete during second session. Harrington will compete in the 100 fly (June 13) and 50 free (June 19), Bondarowicz is entered into the 100 breast (June 13) and 200 breast (June 16) and Tack will compete in the 200 individual medley (June 17).
