ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Baba Kallie (So., Coatesville, Pa.) netted his first goal of the season and
Tyler Fahning (Sr., Victoria, Minn.) recorded three saves en route to a 1-0, home-opener victory over Marist for the Navy men's soccer team Sunday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Â
With the win, Navy improves to 1-0-1 after recording a draw against UMBC last time out while Marist falls to 1-1-0 on the season.
Â
The Midshipmen were led on offense by Kallie who tallied his second career goal along with recording five shots, three of which were on goal. Rounding out the top performers on offense was the duo of
Jacob Williams (Sr., Millersville, Md.) and
Sidney Paris (So., Oakville, Ontario, Canada) who added six and four shots respectively.
Â
Fahning anchored the Navy defense, compiling his third career shutout after stopping all three shots on goal he faced.Â
Â
"I think we had a sustained performance over 90 minutes," said head coach
Tim O'Donohue. "I thought we really played well in the first half, we did a great job creating chances and working off of our defense.
Â
"I'm especially happy for
Tyler Fahning picking up the shutout. After going up by a goal, we didn't finish some chances on the offensive end and he stepped it up for us. I'm happy with how we performed as we start preparing for next week."
Â
The Midshipmen offense came out firing in the first half, recording nine of the game's first 10 shots before finally converting in the 33rd minute on the score by Kallie. The sophomore played a loose ball into the box before beating the Marist goalkeeper to his right and sending a squibbed shot into the back of the net, giving Navy a one-goal lead.
Â
The score by Kallie proved to be the game-winner after the Navy defense stifled the Marist offense the rest of the way allowing a total of just three shots on goal. A late corner-kick attempt in the 89th minute was denied by the Mids' to secure the 1-0 victory in their 2021 home opener.
Â
Marist was led on offense by Skylar Conway who tallied four shots while goalkeeper Sam Iliin recorded eight saves.
Â
The Midshipmen held advantages over the Red Foxes in total shots (19-9), shots on goal (10-3) and corner kicks (5-2).
Â
Navy returns to action when it hosts Iona College for a non-conference matchup at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility Friday, September 3 with opening-kick set for 4 p.m. Â
