Five Mids Earn CoSIDA Academic All-America Accolades

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Five Navy student-athletes garnered Academic All-America recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Friday as part of the organization's at-large sports category.  Men's swimmer Micah Oh (Kent, Wash.) received first-team accolades, men's lacrosse player Christian Daniel (Owings, Md.) and men's tennis player Andrew Ton (Milpitas, Calif.) were named to the second team and women's lacrosse players Caroline Kwon (Cooksville, Md.) and Nicole Victory (Issaquah, Wash.) earned third-team honors.

The at-large sports category consists of women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, women's crew, fencing, women's field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, men's volleyball, water polo and men's wrestling.

Navy student-athletes have garnered 10 Academic All-America awards this season.  The Navy record for the most in a single academic year is 11 (2015-16).  Only Stanford (22) and Alabama (12) have had more Academic All-America selections than Navy during the 2020-21 year.  The final Academic All-America team to be determined –– men's and women's cross country / track and field –– will be announced August 12.  Five Mids are on the ballot for the award.

Oh previously earned First-Team Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA in 2020.  He went on to receive the Elite 90 Award at the 2021 NCAA Championship, which is presented to the athlete with the highest grade-point average competing at the national championship, and recently was named the 2020-21 Patriot League Male Scholar- Athlete of the Year for all league-sponsored sports.  Oh graduated from Navy this spring with a 4.00 cumulative GPA as an honors applied mathematics major and ranked first in his class on the Academic Order of Merit.  The two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his sport also was named the 2020 Patriot League Swimmer of the Year after winning three events at that season's league meet.

Oh joins Britton Smith (1996, first team; 1997, third team) and Ryan Bailey (2016, third team; 2017, first team) as members of the Navy men's swimming and diving team to have received multiple Academic All-America accolades in a career.  Additionally, he is the fourth Mid in the 70 years of the award to have earned multiple first-team laurels (Nicole Aunapu, women's soccer, 1997, '98; Lizzie Barnes, women's soccer, 2006, '08; Stefano Pineda, cross country / track and field, 2018, '19).

Daniel, who was named a CoSIDA Third-Team Academic All-American a year ago, is the first Navy men's lacrosse player to earn multiple Academic All-America citations and only the second (Clipper Lennon, 2004-05) to earn second-team honors.  A 2021 Naval Academy graduate with distinction, Daniel posted a 3.84 grade-point average in astrophysics and was ranked among the top 14 percent in Academic Order of Merit in his class (1,107 students).  He stood No. 1 among the Class of 2021 in Military Order of Merit, while finishing in the top 3 percent in Overall Order of Merit.  He was named to the Commandant's List all eight semesters in his four-year stay in Annapolis, while being selected to the Superintendent's List seven times. Additionally, he was recently named a USILA Scholar All-American.

A starter in 39 of the 40 contests in which he played over his career including each of the last 28, Daniel closed out the 2021 campaign as the team's leading scorer with 31 points on a team-best 16 goals and 15 assists.  A 2021 Second-Team All-Patriot League selection, the Mids' co-captain finished the year with the team's longest active point-scoring streak (15 gms) that dated back to the 2019 finale against Boston U.  During that streak, he posted 56 points on 29 goals and 27 assists and totaled multiple point in 13 of those 15 contests.

Daniel closed out his career ranked 20th on Navy's all-time scoring leader board with 122 points after joining the list on April 3 with his hat trick against Loyola.  Additionally, he stands 20th on the Mids' all-time goals scored list with 76, etching his name into the record book following his two-goal performance in his final collegiate game against Loyola in the 2021 Patriot League Tournament.  He leaves the program also ranked among several Navy career and single-season lists for Patriot League game statistics - #1 in career points (78), #2 in career goals (50), #5(T) in career assists (28), #3(T) in career extra-man goals, #5 and #8 in single-season points (27 in 2019, 23 in 2021) and #4 and #5 in single-season goals (19 in 2019, 16 in 2018).

Ton concluded his academic career with a 3.77 cumulative GPA as a quantitative economics major and earned Graduate with Distinction Honors for ranking 89th in his class on the Overall Order of Merit.  He is the only men's tennis player in Patriot League history to have won all of the league's major individual awards: player of the year (2018, '19, '21), tournament MVP (2018, '21), scholar-athlete of the year (2019, '21) and rookie of the year (2018).  The 2021 recipient of the NAAA Sword for Men as the top male athlete in the class, Ton compiled career records of 70-33 in singles and 66-22 in doubles while playing both No. 1 singles and doubles throughout his four seasons.  Those overall marks included a combined 36-4 record against Patriot League foes.

Ton, Mitch Koch (2000, first team) and Nick Birger (2011, first team) are the lone Navy men's tennis players to have earned Academic All-America recognition.

Kwon and Victory become the fourth and fifth, respectively, women's lacrosse student-athletes to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades, joining Anne Richter (2019, first team), Jasmine DePompeo (2012, third team; 2013, first team) and Kathy Young (2013, third team). The two Academic All-America honorees for women's lacrosse ties Navy's 2013 season for most selections in one year.

The 2021 season marked the first time that Kwon and Victory had garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District distinction.  In addition, the duo was named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) Division I Academic Honor Roll, as well as the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

Kwon, who was one of 13 seniors selected to the medical corps, was named defensive team captain prior to the season.  The mathematics major was selected to the 13-person Patriot League All-Academic team following the season. Kwon started all 12 games on defense for the Midshipmen, finishing the year with 17 ground balls, 12 caused turnovers, and four draw controls.  She concluded her Navy women's lacrosse career with 34 games played, 29 starts, 31 ground balls, 22 caused turnovers, and five draw controls.

Victory led the team in points (42), goals (27), assists (15), and game-winning goals (2) on the season. The robotics and control engineering major was a First Team All-Patriot League and a Patriot League All-Academic selection as a senior, while also earning PL Attacker of the Week accolades three times.  Victory was named to the initial Tewaaraton Award Watch List for her efforts on the field.  She boasted a team-best eight multi-goal games with a team-high six hat tricks in 12 games. Victory finished her Navy career with 53 games played, 26 starts, 137 points on 77 goals and 60 assists, including four game-winning goals, with 29 ground balls, 15 caused turnovers, and a pair of draw controls.
