WASHINGTON, D.C. – Jason Aoyama (So., Narberth, Pa.) netted his first goal of the season and
Tyler Fahning (Sr., Victoria, Minn.) recorded his second-consecutive shutout to lead the Navy men's soccer team to a 1-0 road victory over George Washington Friday at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
Â
With the win, the Midshipmen remain unbeaten at 4-0-1, extending their win streak to four-straight games while the Colonials fall to 2-2-1 on the season.
Â
The Mids were led on offense by Aoyama who tallied four shots, two being on goal, along with what proved to be the game-winning score.
Jacob Williams (Sr., Millersville, Md.) and
Joe Alex (Sr., Lockport, N.Y.) recorded three shots apiece while
Baba Kallie (So., Coatesville, Pa.) added two attempts, one being on goal, to round out the top offensive performers for Navy.
Â
Fahning anchored the Midshipmen defense, compiling his second-consecutive shutout after stopping all four shots he faced, including three of those stops coming in the final five minutes of action.
"It was a good game for us," said head coach
Tim O'Donohue. "We came out and played well against a good team in George Washington to pick up a good road win."Â
The Midshipmen offense controlled the pace in the first half, recording two shots in the first 16 minutes before ultimately converting at the 16:45 mark when Aoyama sent a blistering shot into the top-right hand corner of the net, giving the Mids a one-score advantage.
Â
The score by Aoyama proved to be the game-winner after the Navy defense stifled the George Washington offense the rest of the way, allowing just one shot in the first half and only nine in the game overall. A trio of attempts on goal by the Colonial attack, all of which came with under five minutes to play, were stopped by Fahning to secure the 1-0 road victory.
Â
Liam Emson paced the GW offense with two shots, both being on goal, while goalkeeper Justin Grady tallied three saves along with allowing one score.
Â
The Midshipmen held advantages over the Colonials in total shots (15-4), shots on goal (5-4) and corner kick attempts (3-2).
Â
Navy will return to action looking to extend its win streak to five games when it hosts Longwood for a non-conference contest at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility Tuesday, September 14 with opening kick set for 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES
•Â
CONTROLLING THE PACE – The Navy offense has gotten off to a fast start through its first five games this season, outscoring opponents 8-3 while also outshooting them 94-43. Additionally, the Mids' offense holds advantages over their opposition in shots per game average (18.8-8.6), corner kick attempts (30-17) and goals per game average (1.60-0.60).
Â
•Â
STIFLING THE OPPOSITION – Equally as impressive through the first five games of the season has been the effort of the Navy defense, recording three shutouts thus far and limiting opponents to just three goals. The Midshipmen have recorded three or more shutout performances through their first five games in two of the last three seasons.
Â
•Â
MILESTONE VICTORIES AHEAD – With the win over the Colonials, O'Donohue sits just three wins shy of 200 for his career as a head coach.
