ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team kicked off its 2021-22 season by competing in four different conference competitions over the weekend, highlighted by
Gavin McJones (Jr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) finishing fourth overall at the Laser South Regatta and qualifying for the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship that will take place Oct. 2-3 in Kings Point, N.Y.
Also having a strong showing for the Mids during the Laser South Regatta was
Caden Scheiblauer (Jr., Santa Barbara, Calif.) who finished 13th overall after getting off to a strong start and being in the mix for a qualifying finish throughout the day.
During his run to a qualifying mark for the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship, McJones was one of the most consistent boats on the course, never finishing lower than eighth place in the 14-race series.
The Navy Women's Fall Regatta, and eight-team combined division event, saw Navy post seven top-three finishes in the 12-race series. The Midshipmen compiled a fourth-place finish overall in addition to
Evie Blauvelt (Fr., Marietta, Ga.) and
Faith Southwick (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) finished sixth overall in the combined division, just three points ahead of
Carlyn Blauvelt (Jr., Marietta, Ga.),
Madeline Smith (So., Nokomis, Fla.) and
Maggie Schuler (Fr., League City, Texas) who finished eighth.
The Riley Cup, hosted in Norfolk, Va. by Old Dominion, saw four Navy sailors participate for the first time in their respective collegiate careers. The Midshipmen recorded a seventh-place finish overall, highlighted by
Tanner Kelly (Fr., Westerly, R.I.) and
Linnea Forsberg (Fr., Chevy Chase, Md.) finishing 10th in the A division while
Cooper Walshe (Fr., New York, N.Y.) and Catey Aitken (Fr., San Francisco, Calif.) added a sixth-place finish in the B division.
In its final event of the weekend, the Mids participated in the Philadelphia Fleet Race, hosted by Penn in Philadelphia, Pa. The regatta featured 12 teams, with Navy finishing sixth overall after Colin MacGilivray (Jr., Middleton, R.I.) and
Aubin Hattendorf (So., Arlington, Texas) came in fifth place in the A division while
Robert Ziman (Fr., San Carlos, Calif.) and
Julia Christie (So., Annapolis, Md.) were sixth in the B division.
This coming weekend Navy is set to compete in the Chesapeake Invitational hosted in St. Mary's City, Md. along with hosting the Faye Bennet MAISA Women's Singlehanded's.
