ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy varsity offshore sailing team had seven crews compete in the NASS Race to Oxford and the return race – Hammond Memorial Race – on Saturday and Sunday.
During the 66th NASS Race to Oxford, a 30-mile point-to-point race from Annapolis to Oxford, Md. on Saturday, the top Midshipmen boat was the Gallant which was led by
Gary Munsell (Sr., Healdsburg, Calif.) who led his crew to a second-place finish in the 21-boat class. In that same class,
Kelly White (Sr., Queens, N.Y.) skippered the Integrity,
Teagan Foley led the Tenacious and
Meade Tolen guided the Defiance to fifth, seventh and eighth-place finishes, respectively.
In the J/105 class, Patrick Milchalik (Jr., Naperville, Ill.) led his crew on the Dreadnought to a second-place mark out of seven boats. Maddy Ploch (Jr., Stamford, Conn.) and crew finished third aboard the Avenger and Sam Hall (Sr., Perkinsville, Vt.) and his Constellation crew were sixth.
On Sunday, in the Hammond Memorial Race, White paced her Integrity crew to a first-place finish in their class followed by Foley's Tenacious crew in second, just mere boat lengths behind the Integrity. Munsell's Gallant team finished third and Tolen's Defiance crew took fourth to round out the top finishers for Navy in the class.
In the J/105's, Ploch's Avenger crew led wire-to-wire in a first-place finish with Michalik's Dreadnought team taking second. Rounding out the top finishers for Navy in the J/105 class was Hall's crew on the Constellation which finished fourth.
Navy returns to action this coming weekend as it takes part in the Shields Trophy Regatta in addition to the Hospice Cup Regatta.
