ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team will begin its fall slate of tournaments this weekend as players from the team are entered into two events. The majority of the squad will take part in the Joe Hunt Invite here in Annapolis, while
Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) and
Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) will compete in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
The field for the sixth edition of the Joe Hunt Invite also includes players from Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, St. Bonaventure, Delaware, Saint Josephs, Richmond, Fairleigh Dickinson and George Mason. The event runs Friday through Sunday and will utilize all of the available courts both on The Yard and inside and outside of the Brigade Sports Complex. Play will start at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday, weather permitting.
The event is named after the 1942 graduate of the USNA who won the intercollegiate national title in singles (precursor to NCAA) in 1941 and the 1943 USTA National Championship (U.S. Open). Hunt lost his life in an aviation training accident in 1945 prior to the end of World War II. He remains the lone player in the sport's history to have won U.S. boys (ages 15 and under), juniors (18 and under), collegiate and national / U.S. Open titles in singles. Hunt was posthumously inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
One of the outdoor courts on the USNA was dedicated as Joe Hunt Court as part of the 2015 inaugural playing of the tournament.
Panyan and Segraves are entered into the 45th edition of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, which runs Saturday through Monday. It is the longest running collegiate tennis tournament in the country outside of the NCAA Tournament. The winners of the men's and women's singles draws at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic receive a wild card berth into the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall National Championship.
This year's scaled-down event features a 32-player draw in singles and a 16-team bracket in doubles. The men's field will compete at the Milwaukee Country Club and the women's matches will take place at Western Racquet Club. All championship matches will be held at the Western Racquet Club on Monday, Sept. 20th.
