Making its first appearance in nearly a month (Dec. 11 at Maryland), Navy placed three wrestlers at the David H. Lehman Franklin & Marshall Open held Friday in Lancaster, Pa. Team captain
Jacob Allen (125 / Sr / Poway, Calif.) paced the Mids with a second-place finish, while
Andrew Cerniglia (157 / So / Nazareth, Pa.) took fourth and
Ryan Catka (285 / Fr / Brookhaven, Pa.) placed sixth.
Allen beat his first three opponents by a combined four points to punch his ticket into the finals, including a 3-1 victory over Bucknell's Calvin Dalton in the opening round. After Dalton leveled the match just four seconds into the third period, Allen, the #2 seed in the tournament, scored the match-winning takedown 36 seconds into sudden victory to advance.
Allen scored all three of his points in the third period to defeat Penn State's Gary Steen (unattached) 3-2 in the quarters, while in his semifinals match he scored four-consecutive points over the first and second periods to secure a spot in the finals with a 5-3 win over Virginia's Patrick McCormick. McCormick, meanwhile, built a 8-1 advantage thanks to a pair of takedowns and a four-point nearfall en route to a 12-3 win in the championship bout against Allen.
Eighteenth-ranked Cerniglia entered the tournament as the #1 seed and carved his way through the bracket with win over Edinboro's PJ Gohn (7-3), Air Force's Giano Petrucelli (9-2) and Virginia Tech's Jackson Spires (15-1). Cerniglia held Gohn scoreless in the second and third periods, while Petrucelli's only points were scored off a pair of escapes. Spires, meanwhile, mustered his lone point in the match by way of an escape midway through the third period.
Cerniglia's day, however, abruptly came to an end in the semifinals when he bowed out of his match against Penn State recruit Levi Haines due to injury and was forced to medically forfeit his third-place match against Virginia's Denton Spencer.
Catka battled his way into the fifth-place match by wins over North Carolina's Brandon Whitman (6-3), Davidson's Jake Fernicola (21-6), Davidson's Mitchell Trigg (14-7) and Edinboro's Max Millin (6-5). Catka put together a strong comeback in his match against Millin, whom he trailed 4-1 with 57 seconds remaining in the match. Catka rallied with an escape, followed by a takedown with 36 seconds left to even the match at 4. Millin, however, tacked on a point for an escape with 32 seconds left, but Catka sealed the victory with a takedown with 26 seconds to go in the match. The consolation of 4 match pit Catka against teammate
Grady Griess, who took a medical forfeit, sending Catka into the fifth-place bout against Lehigh's Nathan Taylor. Taylor sent Catka into the consolation following a 10-6 loss in the round of 16 and Taylor, the #3 seed, would again defeat the rookie in the placement match 3-2.
