PHILADELPHIA – All three Navy rowing teams were in action on Sunday with racing at the 2022 Navy Day Regatta. The heavyweight squad was the most active with 11 crews entered in racing. The heavies were also the most successful as they earned victories in the men's freshmen eight and men's collegiate JV eight events. Racing twice on Sunday, Navy's lightweight program was led by its first varsity eight crew, that cruised to a 10-second victory in the men's collegiate lightweight eight competition on the Schuylkill River. The Mids' female contingent picked up a pair of top-five results.
Competing on an approximate 4,000-meter stretch of the Schuylkill in a single-file head style format, the heavyweights were first on the water on Sunday with two crews in the men's collegiate four race. Going up against 25 other boats, the Mids placed second and sixth overall with times of 12:17.53 and 12:38.71, respectively. Navy's top crew finished 1.40 seconds behind the winning time set down by Temple.
The men's freshmen eight race had four Navy entrants, two from each of the heavyweight and lightweight programs. Making their collegiate racing debuts, the Mids in Navy's heavyweight A boat won the gold with a time of 11:27.52. The top lightweight crew was right behind with a runner-up time of 11:33.77. The heavyweight B and lightweight B crews rounded out the top-five with respective times of 11:51.74 and 12:11.45, good for fourth and fifth place.
Navy's women made their initial appearance of the day in the women's freshmen eight event. One of five boats entered in the race, the Mids posted a time of 13:41.16 to finish second overall behind La Salle, who completed the course at 13:25.32.
A pair of collegiate junior varsity events were next up. Competing in a field of seven crews, the Navy heavyweights finished first, third and fourth, all with times under 11:51. The Mids' B crew turned in a victorious time of 11:29.79, 14.23 seconds better than second-place Temple. Navy's women's team also raced in their respective JV race as one of 14 competitors. The Mids clocked in with a 13:40.82 result to place fifth overall.
The competition concluded with each of the respective programs entering in a varsity collegiate eight event. The heavyweights had four boats racing in the field of 28 and saw its first boat finish seventh with a time of 11:17.34. Navy's B and C crews went back-to-back in the standings in 10th and 11th with respective 11:27.26 and 11:29.12 times. The Mids' fourth crew placed 18th at 11:54.71.
"It was a solid day for our younger athletes winning the Freshmen 8+ and JV 8+ events," remarked
Rob Friedrich, the Tom & Candy Knudson Director of Navy Rowing and head coach of the heavyweights. "Our other boats have work to do, but I have confidence in their training and development. It's a great group of hard-working athletes and their effort will pay off in the end."
The lightweights finished their day of racing with three of their boats in the men's collegiate lightweight eight event. The Mids' top crew turned in a dominant time of 10:52.19 that surpassed second-place Penn by 10.29 seconds. When ranked against the top time of the heavyweight collegiate race, Navy was 3.59 seconds faster than the Penn heavyweights. The Mids' second and third lightweight crews finished sixth at 11:33.18 and seventh at 11:43.03, respectively.
The women's day closed with both of their crews placing in the top-11 in a field of 30. The Mids' B boat led the way as it clocked in with a time of 13:02.69, good for ninth place. Held back by a 30-second penalty, Navy's A boat finished 11th with 13:08.78 final time. Without the penalty that Mids' original time would've been good for third in the field.
"We've put in some good work so far this fall, but we definitely have a long way to go, "said
Joe Schlosberg, head coach of the women's team. "We'll continue putting in the work on the Severn, getting better and making adjustments."
Navy's top varsity boats from all three programs will be in action next weekend at the 2022 Head of the Charles Regatta. The Mids have four total boats scheduled to race on the Charles River in Boston, one on Saturday and three on Sunday.
