Bridget Hoang Sets Program Record, Finishes Runner-Up in Delaware’s Battle at the Beach

Navy Women’s Golf Takes Sixth Place; Hoang Sets School Record for 54-Hole Score at 1-Under Par 215

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – Sophomore golfer Bridget Hoang put together a record-setting weekend finish as the individual runner-up, while the Navy women's golf team was able to hold onto sixth place in the University of Delaware's ninth annual Battle at the Beach, held Saturday and Sunday at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club.

Hoang broke the program record for a 54-hole tournament score by shooting a 1-under par 215 over three rounds on the 6169-yard course, competing separately from the Midshipmen lineup. The rest of the Navy team combined to shoot a 53-over par 917 and tie Quinnipiac for sixth place on the 12-team leaderboard, shooting 14-over par 302 in the opening round and 20-over par 308 in the second round before posting a 19-over par 307 score in the final round.

Dartmouth notched an impressive 16-over par 880 to take first place and boasted the tournament's top player, Sophie Thai, who shot a 6-under par 210 to beat out Hoang. The 37th-ranked Harvard squad placed second at 27-over par 891, while host Delaware and Penn tied for third with scores of 33-over par 897 and Seton Hall rounded out the top-five teams at 40-over par 904.

Hoang started the weekend with a tournament-low 3-under par 69 in the first round, a mark that is tied for the second-lowest individual round in program history, tallying three birdies while scoring par on every other hole. She then shot a 2-over par 74 in the second round on Saturday, as five bogeys offset three more birdies, and bounced back in the final round on Sunday after having two bogeys on the front nine by shooting back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes and finishing at even-par 72. Hoang's overall score of 1-under par 215 is the lowest 54-hole score by a Navy player since Shannon Gould shot 7-over par 217 at the par-70 Bucknell Invitational in 2019. The next lowest 54-hole, par-72 score by a Mid after Hoang was by teammate Mara Hirtle at last season's Bucknell Invitational, where Hirtle shot a 2-over par 218.

Senior captain Eve Worden was the best finisher out of Navy's starting five, tying for 24th at 12-over par 228. Worden posted rounds of 6-over par 78 and 5-over par 77 on Saturday, but responded with a 1-over par 73 performance in the final round to move up 11 spots.

The reigning back-to-back Patriot League Golfer of the Week, Hirtle posted back-to-back rounds of 5-over par 77 on Saturday and a 4-over par 76 in the final round, with the junior earning a tie for 31st place at 14-over par 230.

Freshman Sue Lue was right behind Hirtle at 15-over par 231, placing in a tie for 33rd, as the rookie had rounds of 6-over par 78, 3-over par 75 and 6-over par 78, including recording a par-5 eagle on the fourth hole during the Saturday's second round.

Finishing tied for 45th, junior Stephanie Lee shot an 18-over par 234 over the two days in Delaware, notching a 3-over par 75 in the opening round before finishing with rounds of 7-over par 79 and 8-over par 80.

Sophomore Jenna Han closed out the tournament with a 20-over par 236 that earned her a four-way tie for 51st, opening with an even-par 72 round before shooting back-to-back rounds of 10-over par 82.

"The team had several exciting moments this weekend," said head coach Nadia Ste-Marie. "Along with Bridget's individual finish at one-under to place second, Sue had her eagle on the par-5 during an impressive second round and Eve had a very steady final round."

Navy will finish the fall slate on Oct. 24 and Oct. 25 with a trip to the Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa., taking part in the Lehigh Invitational.
