Most Recent Matchup - October 4, 2021 in Annapolis
Taking a brief break from Patriot League play, the Navy cruised to a 5-0 win at home on Monday over Delaware State University. The Mids used a well-rounded team attack as 19 different players saw time with seven recording either a goal or assist and two more combining for the shutout in goal versus the Hornets at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Emma FrommeltSophie Utsinger and Olivia Foster all scored their first collegiate goals, with Amanda Graziano and Caitlin Doran adding to the Mids' grand total. Navy's goalkeeping performance on Monday saw Megan LaMendola and Kaitlyn Burns split the 90 minutes on their way for the combined clean sheet.

The host Midshipmen started lighting up the scoreboard early and often as Frommelt put Navy up 1-0 at 12:01. Less than two minutes later, Doran entered her name in the line score as she took a shot on goal only to have it saved before recovering the rebound and immediately putting the ball back past the goalkeeper at 13:49.

Up 2-0, Navy increased its lead to three goals six and half minutes later at 19:23 when Graziano took a throw-in at midfield, dribbled past her defender and sprinted up the near sideline for 30-plus yards before going in one-on-one with the goalie and depositing the shot for her second goal of her freshman season.

With less than five minutes remaining in the first half, the Mids went up 4-0 when a crisp series of passes setting up Utsinger for a close-in shot on goal at 41:53.

Coming out of halftime up by four goals, Navy added one more score to its final total in the 52nd minute. As Tori Liesen dribbled inside the 18-yard box, the freshman forward was fouled by a Delaware State defender drawing a penalty kick. Foster was called upon to take the penalty kick and the junior calmly placed her shot into the back of the net. Foster's first career goal finished the scoring on Monday as Navy closed out its five-goal victory with 38 more minutes of shutout play. Burns played a role in keeping Delaware State off the scoreboard when she grabbed a lofted shot by the Hornets' Ashley Ventura in the 82nd minute.

For the game, Navy outshot Delaware State, 27-3 with a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Mids also held a 9-1 margin in corner kicks.

Last Time Out: October 15 at Army
The 2022 Women's Soccer Star Match went the way of the host Army Black Knights on Saturday night by a score of 2-0. Playing before a standing-room only crowd at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field, the Mids struggled to build long, controlled possessions and were unable to produce many successful scoring opportunities, while the Black Knights used goals in each of the halves to earn the Star and end the Mids' three-game winning streak in the heated service academy rivalry.

Mattie Gallagher was an individual standout of Navy on Saturday night as she stopped seven shots on goal, including numerous sprawling saves.

Energized by the stakes of the game, both teams came out with active offensive attacks early. Army had the first look as Elise Urkov volleyed a shot towards the left side of the net in the second minute only to see Gallagher stretch out and dive through the air to snag it. On the ensuing possession, Alexa Riddle took aim for the Black Knights' goal, though her shot sailed wide right. Army took two more shots over this initial 10-minute run of play.

With the game still scoreless into the late portion of the first half, Army broke through in the 42nd minute as Brigid Duffy threaded a lead pass to Kaitlin Palaian, who didn't miss her chance and deposited the ball in the back of the net.

Down 1-0 coming out to start the second half, Sadie McCaleb tried to spark Navy's offense and even the score with a curling shot on goal from the top of the 18-yard box in the 55th minute. Unfortunately for the Mids, the Black Knights' goalkeeper Sage Strohman was up to the task and snagged the shot.

Less than three minutes later, Gallagher made sure the deficit stayed at just 1-0 as she denied Duffy's point-blank look with an all-out dive to her right. She continued aiding Navy's comeback attempt with two more saves, a Madison Niebish shot on goal in the 67th minute and a Palaian attempt in 70th.

Army's consistent pressure eventually resulted in an insurance marker in the 76th minute as Kaelen Bradley put away a rebound off of Elise Urkov' original shot.

In the 2-0 defeat, Navy was out-shot by Army, 19-13. The Black Knights held a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal and a slight 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
