Izzy Castagnetti posted a career-high seven saves in the victory ... Holy Cross was picked tenth out of 10 teams in the Patriot League's preseason coaches poll with 21 voting points.

Most Recent Matchup: October 23, 2021 in Worcester
With a Patriot League postseason berth lying in the balance on Saturday, Navy turned in a well-rounded team effort at Holy Cross and earned a hard-fought 1-0 shutout victory. The Mids received a go-ahead goal from Alexa Riddle and a staunch defensive effort from goalie Mattie Gallagher and Navy's backfield in defeating the Crusaders at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium.

Both teams used the opening 10 minutes of action on Saturday to feel each other out as neither side was able to put their one of their attempt on target. Jenna Daunt recorded Navy's first shot on goal in the 14th minute. Less than two minutes later, Riddle made the Mids' second shot on goal count as she received a lead pass in space by Carolyn Mang and sprinted up the right wing towards goal and slotted a shot past Holy Cross' goalkeeper Olivia Dubin at 15:13.

Over the next 20 minutes, the Mids registered three of the next four shots with a Molly Gillcrist shot on goal at 34:49 highlighting this run of play. Gallagher kept Navy ahead 1-0 going into halftime as she turned aside Holy Cross' Ashley Blaka's shot on frame in the 36th minute.

Coming out of the intermission up by a goal, Gallagher and the Mids' defense had a stranglehold on the Crusaders in the second half as the hosts just took one total shot over the first 30 minutes of the stanza, a Blaka shot on goal in the 52nd minute. During this span Navy was credited with three shots on goal, though all three attempts were denied by Dubin.

Holy Cross had a trio of dangerous offensive situations over the final 15 minutes of play and Navy survived all three opportunities. First up was a Cerys Balmer penalty kick at 76:25 that was pushed wide. The Crusaders' final two shots on goal, a Katie Quinn effort in the 78th minute and a Blaka crack in the 86th minute were both stonewalled by Gallagher to preserve the clean sheet.

In Navy's 1-0 victory, the Mids outshot the Crusaders, 11-8 with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Last Time Out: October 18 at Delaware State
The Navy women's soccer team got back to its winning ways with a dominant 3-0 victory over Delaware State on the road Tuesday afternoon. Playing at Drass Field in Dover, the Mids used a pair of goals by Isabella Romano and a third by Amanda Graziano, while their defense completely shut out the Hornets and held the hosts without a shot over the 90-minute contest.

The Mids controlled much of the action in the first half though they struggled to make in-roads on the scoreboard. The visitors took four shots over the opening 20 minutes of action and tested DSU's goalkeeper Ashley Maribo with a Chloe Dawson shot on goal in the 12th minute.

Navy continued to pressure Delaware State in the attacking third as Mimi Abusham recorded back-to-back shots in the 30th minute as her initial shot was blocked by a defender before her second look made its way on frame before being stopped by Maribo. The Mids finally broke through a little over three minutes later at 33:48 when Abusham gathered a through ball over the top and dribbled into the box. After a slight hesitation to help Navy build its numbers, Romano got the pass in stride and quickly deposited a shot into the lower right corner of the goal.

After out-shooting Delaware State, 10-0 with four shots on goal over the first 45 minutes of action, Navy picked up its work rate in the attacking third even more in the second half. In the first five-plus minute of the second stanza the Mids recorded three shots with both Abusham and Graziano challenging Maribo with shots on goal. Less than minutes later at 51:54, a crisp sequence of a deep Sadie McCaleb throw-in, a Rylee Rives header flick and a Graziano one-timer resulted in Navy's second goal of the game.

After three more shots on goal were denied, the Mids' fourth attempt found the back of the net in the 81st minute. Following another lengthy throw-in by McCaleb into a cluttered six-yard box, a messy clearance by DSU's defense saw Romano gain possession and quickly snap a shot past Maribo to extend Navy's advantage to 3-0.

In Navy's 3-0 win, Navy outshot Delaware State, 26-0 with a 14-0 final total in shots on goal. The Mids also held a 10-3 lead in corner kicks. Overall, 22 Midshipmen saw action on Tuesday with 17 playing over 20 minutes.
